Today I chat with behavioral economist and junior high buddy Matt Nagler about what's wrong with modern economic theory.
According to classical economics of the last 75 years, all we're doing as humans is trying to maximize our satisfaction subject to constraints like money, time, attributes, and skills.
Luckily, this isn't actually how we spend our time and energy.
But listening too carefully to economists can mess with our happiness, relationships, and ultimately the experience of life itself.
We dive into a bunch of key concepts, including:
- self-interest and altruism
- when maximizing utility isn't the best strategy for happiness
- the endowment effect
- the relationship between ownership and value
- alternate frameworks for decision-making
- the deep and hidden significance of reference points
- positional satisfaction and comparison with others
- lessons from 20 minutes of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
- the evolutionary roots of status-seeking
- the role of surprises and crises in shaping and enriching our lives
