On this episode, we sit down with Marie (@marie.pontini) from Canada to discuss all things multiple sclerosis, ehlers danlos syndrome, gastroparesis, and bodybuilding. Fitness and acceptance have played a huge role in Marie’s management of Multiple Sclerosis symptoms, both physical and cognitive. Also, this episode serves as another reminder that ambulatory wheelchair users exist! Normalize using mobility aids whenever or however your body needs it. Mentioned: TNT competition in Canada (http://www.tntmuscle.ca/), Elemental nutrition Vivonex® RTF to treat gastroparesis. Host for this episode: Marcia Darbouze (@thatdoc.marcia), Marybeth Baluyot (@merrbertt) A message from DGWL: We do our very best to ensure we are inclusive to all members of the community. Not very many podcasts consider the deaf and hard-of-hearing population, but we applaud those who do and challenge those who don’t. That said, we are looking for volunteers to help us transcribe future episodes--there are transcriptions available online for our current episodes--but we still need help! This episode was so much fun to say the least. Kim Kelly, badass author, labor journalist, former VICE staffer, circus act, roadie and everything in between, shared her experience with putting ectrodactyly on a performing stage and traveling across towns as what sideshows called the “Lobster Girl.” Then writing about the beauties and flaws of heavy metal turned into labor rights and disability justice pieces and recently led to a book tour for her newest book, ‘FIGHT LIKE HELL: The Untold History of American Labor.' Managing self-care might seem so cliche in today’s age of mental health awareness, but it’s one thing to say it and it’s another to act on it. We discuss the steps we take to find ourselves in the middle of life chaos, while the world is in dumpster fire flames, and doing so without breaking the bank. Not many of us have the privilege to escape, go on a backpacking trip through Europe to try and find peace, or move our home to the Hamptons, when living gets hard. How do we adjust our movement with mental health and illness changes? What does that look like for you? Do you put up boundaries for yourself and others? Books and resources discussed: Set Boundaries, Find Peace. In this episode, Melina joins Marybeth to discuss life on the set as a queer, disabled director and producer. How can we make more sets, stages, and venues more accommodating for PWDs? How is this translated in the hiring or casting process? Where have we made headway and what needs more work? “I believe storytelling is inherently a mode of activism and being able to stand, through my work, for inclusion and positive representation is something that drives me in my whole career… Your voice matters. Creatives who are disabled need to be 10x as good as their abled counterparts to get half the opportunities. Through all of that, the thing that has saved me is knowing, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I have something to say and a story to tell that is vital for audiences to hear.” Listen for more! Ryann spent most of her life with an invisible disability and recently transitioned to using a wheelchair full time. In this episode, Marcia and Marybeth take the time to acknowledge the 30th birthday of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the 504 Sit-In that led to it, and the foundation on which disabled people can now build lives that include a guarantee of the right to vote, gain an education, work, engage in commerce and marry. There of course is still a lot of work to do as this “guarantee” is only based on legality and not reality, but we have come a long way thanks to the many disability rights activists and changemakers of the United States. Ableism is alive and well but communities like ours and conversations such as the ones you are having more frequently with your friends and colleagues is important now more than ever. We need to continue to fight and vote for access and equity. We need to make our voices heard, our stories shared and this time, from our perspective. It can sometimes become lonely and confusing to live with a rare, chronic disease, or to not be diagnosed at all. What do we do for survival? What do we do for happiness? What are some feel-good activities or products to give you that extra release of the chemical, dopamine? When we say protect your energy, we mean it. Because self-care is the practice of caring for your physical, emotional, and psychological well being, it shouldn't be surprising to learn that it does, in fact, have an effect on your mental health. In this episode, hosts Marcia (@thatdoc.marcia) and Marybeth (@merrbertt) discuss how they cope and interact with society on a daily from setting boundaries to finding desirability and turning pain into healing. In this episode, Marcia & Marybeth discuss how to protect your energy beyond posting shareable quotes from Instagram. We touch on coping skills, self awareness, self care, mindset, setting boundaries, loving yourself first, meditation, adulting, negotiating relationships, and dealing with grief. It shouldn’t be surprising that these all have effects on your mental health. The only thing that is surprising is how little we are all talking about it! Trigger warning : there is mention of sexual assault in this episode. In episode 7, Marybeth, Marcia and Chloe discuss their identities, the complexities of identity and how embracing “your existence is resistance.” Marybeth and Marcia share childhood obstacles of growing up as WOC. Marybeth dives into queerness and her new experiences in a polyamorous relationship. Chloe relives the horror stories of past dating and friendships. The hosts examine whether disabilities should be presented as “terms and conditions” in dating and friendship relationships. We constantly challenge ourselves and each other to fight internalized ableism/sexism/racism/colorism/homophobia/fat phobia/etc and recognize the privilege we have to have a platform where we can openly speak about these issues and identities.
