I first met Dennis through social media when he asked me to be a guest blogger for his blog PsychReg. I’ve watched it over the years, and it has grown. It now includes conferences, academic papers, and a podcast too.

When I ask people to be a guest, I ask them to send me a short bio, but his is definitely the shortest one I’ve ever received!

He emailed me this – “Dennis Relojo-Howell is the founder of Psychreg and is the host of The DRH Show”

However, he has an amazing story of starting life in the slums of Manila where he lived with his family with no running water or electricity to becoming an international speaker, author and award-winning blog psychologist

We discuss how living in the slums shaped his life and how he used education as his route out. He has a passion now in teaching resilience as a skill, especially to young people also growing up in a challenging environment

Some key points from our interview:

· How he’s grateful for his childhood as it influenced and shaped him

· How he recognises he was salvaged by his parents when he was an adolescent when he experienced a disconnect from himself

· How his parents instilled the value of education to all three of their children who all have completed at least one university degree

· How he’s used education as way for social mobility

· How he believes that resilience is something that can be taught to everyone

· How’s he’s passionate now about giving back by developing a resilience intervention using blogging for people living in low- and middle-income countries

· How he doesn’t share his story to get pity but to show people with the right mindset, resilience and grit you can make positive changes to your life
