"You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want." - Zig Ziglar Coach Nick and the Dudes of Disruption discuss the relationship between being in contribution and growing as a person and as a leader. They highlight the impact that being in service has on our lives because it gives us the opportunity while we are inside of the experience to notice what triggers us, what inspires us and where we can stretch. The disruption is that if you are committed to learning and growing, being in contribution increases your awareness and creates new possibilities. The disruption is to also learn how when you are in breakdown or upset, that the fastest way out of that mindset, is to look out and make a difference for others. Research indicates that when we operate from a place of contribution and service, it creates a stronger connection between the receiver and the giver inside of the experience. Also, studies show that when you are in contribution it impacts your health, creates happier marriages and increases your level of job satisfaction. When in doubt, look out!…
"Mother is her son's first god; she must teach him the most important lesson of all - how to love."- Unknown Coach Nick and the Dudes of Disruption discuss the important relationship between mothers and their sons. They highlight the impact that mothers have on the way their sons develop. The Mom and son relationship is usually the first major relationship a son will establish in the world. The disruption is that it's never too late to have a relationship with your mom even if she's physically passed from this world. The disruption is to also learn how you can be different with your relationship with your mom because that may influence how you are in relationship with other people. "The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug." – Mark Twain Words. We throw them around without realizing sometimes just how much power they hold. The Dudes will explore and discuss the things we say and don’t say, and how that can be an indicator of our core beliefs about ourselves, and how many times we give ourselves away in our language, without even realizing it. The disruption during this episode is that words are everything – they are your most powerful tool when you want to create a desired environment and culture - there are no throwaway words or throw away moments. That the most important element for a leader is to be intentional and deliberate about the words, the declarations, the commitments and the statements they deliver. “In some ways, siblings…are more influential in your childhood than your parents.” Deborah Tannen Much has been written about the impact of parents on the development of a human being. The relationship of a sibling has just as much impact on us at both the conscious and unconscious level. The episode will share research that shows how a child’s sensory perceptions of their siblings occurs as early and as often as one of the parental relationship. Also the research will highlight that the strength of the sibling relationship will generate many benefits related to health and well-being, resiliency, fulfillment, happiness, etc. The Dudes of Disruption podcast will explore one of the most relationships in a person’s life – the relationship with their sibling. The disruption here is to reconsider and reconnect with this critical relationship in new ways – that through this relationship, regardless of where you are in relation to your sibling, you can learn so much about yourself inside of that relationship. And those learnings can be mapped to every other relationship you have both at home and in your professional life. “Never Judge a Book by its Cover” - anonymous The Dudes of Disruption podcast was inspired by the movie “Wonder” which I watched over the holidays. I was both moved and reminded of the importance of how we need to be aware of our judgements and assumptions of others both personally and professionally. Our judgements and assumptions are influencing how we interact with others – and those interactions are producing the choices and actions we take which ultimately produces the results we are generating in our lives. The show explores the importance of understanding that your first impression is just a first impression – be willing to be wrong about that first impression. Recognize that a first impression is an automatic based on a series of things that have brought you to this place and that you don’t have to be right about them. “In order to carry a positive action we must develop here a positive vision.” - Dali Lama The Dudes of Disruption show was inspired by a recent vision board and declarations exercise we conducted with the DoD Men’s Group (I also lead this vision board and declarations exercise at companies, team building and retreats, project and client launches, etc.). The Dudes of Disruption explore the role and the power of getting connected to what you are committed to and then making clear and powerful declarations in front of others is an out of this world experience. The disruption is the belief that life is a certain way or that things are just this way and there’s no changing them. Everything is made up. So, go out and make up something that serves you and the world and declare them. Why are declarations important? A declaration is an official statement – a line in the sand. Since everything is made up of energy, all energies travel in frequencies and vibrations. Therefore each declaration you make carries its own vibrational frequency which makes the possibility of those declarations actually happening. “Xmas will always be as long as we stand heart to heart and hand in hand.” - Dr Seuss Why do we primarily (and in some cases only) donate during the holidays? Why do we seem so connected to family and friends more than ever during this period? Why are New Yorkers so friendly during this time? Why is that teams go for a holiday dinner yet rarely celebrate during the year? Why do we seem so committed to creating surprise and awe for the people around us primarily during December? Coach Nick & the Dudes of Disruption will discuss the importance of disrupting the norm of being 'in the spirit' only around the December holidays. The Dudes will explore how to bring the holiday spirit in July so you are joyous, giving and kind always – They will discuss the importance that creating awe and surprise throughout the year on your culture at home and at work because of the benefits the experience creates for both the giver and the receiver. The show makes the point that when we choose to bring the spirit of December throughout the year there’s an opportunity to create a different experience for the people around us – at work and at home. “We tend to accept information that confirms our prior beliefs and ignore or discredit information that does not. This confirmation bias settles over our eyes like distorting spectacles for everything we look at”- Kyle Hill Coach Nick & The Dudes of Disruption explore the role that Unconscious Bias plays in the actions and behaviors we choose to make and don’t make – we all have biases and we are always interacting and relating to others with our biases. The conversation that the Dudes take on is not about making yourself or others wrong, but rather to become aware of them and to disrupt them in order to create something new. We are always finding ways to confirm those biases so it’s critical to disrupt them especially if they no longer serve us. Whatever is in the background is driving your choices, decisions and behaviors. So if you want a different result, then explore what’s in the background. Your biases. “And, in the end, The love you take, is equal to the love you make.” – The Beatles According to Gallup, 22 million workers or about 70% of the US workforce is "actively disengaged," or extremely negative in their workplace. This costs the U.S. economy up to $300 billion dollars a year in productivity. Coach Nick & The Dudes of Disruption discuss one of the main ingredients to change this trend of disengagement with active practice of appreciation. The show explores the importance and the role that appreciating, acknowledging and recognizing people creates – at work with your teams and colleagues and at home with you family and friends. The disruption is to shift our relationship around appreciating others – making the time and creating the space to fill other people’s relationship account in the same way you make deposits in a bank account. When you fill up other people’s relationship account, they do more, they share more and they become more loyal. Most organizations loudly declare that the “customer is king”, “our guests come first,” “we serve our shareholders first,” “the customer is always right”…And often the employees and team of the organization serving all these audiences comes second. Coach Nick Papadopoulos and the Dudes of Disruption explore what would be possible if an organization and leader set and worked inside of a context of “People First.” Inside the paradigm of “People First,” everyone gets the experience of feeling included – inside of this inclusive paradigm, separation gets eliminated and people come together in a new way aligned towards the same direction. The show examines that when we are committed to inclusivity, people in business and in the world, people show up differently. “As you set out for Ithaka/ hope your road is a long one,/ full of adventure, full of discovery.” Ithaca poem – CP Cavafay Coach Nick and the Dudes of Disruption explore the lessons learned from the recent completion of the Spartan Race. Coach Nick and his Dudes of Disruption Men’s Group completed the Spartan Race while also raising $23k for veterans in need through Operation Homefront. “Ithaca” represents our goals at home and at work and the end results that we are desiring. The disruption that the podcast offers is around the importance of being present during the journey leading up to any “Ithaca.” The juice is in the experience and the journey and what comes up during that process versus the end result. The result is important obviously and what gets explored in the discussion is the importance of reflecting and noticing along the way to the goal/result – When we are focused on the journey versus the end goal, we are more likely to be present and to learn in the moment and be able to expand on what’s working and adjust real-time. When you are someone who over commits or who has a challenge to saying no or renegotiating their priorities then you run the risk of not really being committed to anything at all – and there’s a cost for over-extending as it relates to your health, to the condition of your relationships and the results you produce. The disruption is to pay attention to the commitments we make and to whom we say yes to and the reasons we make or continue to make those commitments. The disruption is to take the opportunity to see if we are saying YES to a commitment because of a disempowering reason or because of some disempowering story we have about ourselves. And Coach Nick and the Dudes of Disruption offer strategies to shift the conversation so you are committing to things that matter most and for the right reasons. People and teams give significance to the most interesting things – sometimes we give meaning to things that are not necessary or all that meaningful in the big picture of life - Things like a sports game (game 7 of a playoff series), or TV shows (what the main character will say in an upcoming episode), or when making a big deal about the newest iPhone that’s coming out, etc. Yet we don’t always seem to take that same time and energy to give meaning to things that give our life more value - that give our life the real juice – the things that actually live in our reality. Coach Nick and the Dudes of Disruption disrupt how we relate to acknowledging achievements and to look for more opportunities to celebrate – large or small - rather than taking things for granted – rather than living one moment to another without ever “smelling the roses” – after all, what you focus on expands. The disruptors emphasize the importance of creating a habit out of celebrating everything all the time. As part of the celebration, the Dudes of Disruption show celebrates its two year anniversary – the original creators of the show, Gregory Nesmith and Tommy Spero join the disruption. As we get closer to election day, the buzz around the campaign has hit a fever pitch. Gone are the kitten videos from our Facebook feeds, replaced now with a lot of hate, lies and negative comments about both candidates. We are a country divided, and with candidates so opposite one another, it is no wonder we as a people are polarized. Why do we align ourselves with certain candidates? Do we see some of ourselves in them or are we looking for a parent figure to take care of us? Why do we stand our ground, sometimes blindly ignoring the facts, simply to prove we are right? This week the Dudes get into where all this is coming from and why these two candidates drum up so much emotion in us. All of us have been called a “big baby” at one point or another. While we may laugh at the idea, there is a foundation of truth in that statement. We make meaning out of everything, starting very early in our lives. At an early age, many of our beliefs about ourselves are formed. The influence of our parents and how we are raised, our neighborhood and friend group all play a role. Major events at a young age form the frame that we see life through and we carry that as adults. This week the Dudes discuss the origins of our core beliefs about ourselves and how as adults we can take back the reigns and live life more powerfully. Me, me, me. We are naturally selfish, though we don’t like to admit it. For many the thought of giving to others is foreign, while for some, it is the guiding principle for how they live their lives. So where are you holding back and why? This week the Dudes dig into what being in contribution means. Whether it be community service, helping out a friend, giving money to charities, or j or a million other ways we can contribute, being in service to others is a way for us to get out of heads and get out of our own way. Last week we lit the spark and this week we continue to keep the fire burning as we go deeper! So in this Round 2 of a much larger conversation, as we tackle these, and more, questions: 1. Is monogamy normal and healthy for men? 2. How good is your sex life? 3. What we the dudes learned about women and sex? All we can say is… let’s get it on! This week the Dudes take on what is clearly our favorite subject, #SEX. Or at least that is what society will have you believe. While movies and the internet paints men as a ball of raging hormones, with nothing else on our minds, we know that’s not true, at least most of the time! Men do want connection, but we show it differently. Trust us we don’t always only think with our head…. Consider this Round 1 of a much larger conversation, as we tackle some great questions: Do men want sex more than women? Better sex metaphor: Baseball or Pizza? Is monogamy normal and healthy for men? Can men and women be friends without sleeping with each other? Can a man be too vulnerable? What do men need at home from a women? Tradition has the man taking the lead in romance. We ask women out, we initiate sex, and we ask for their hands in marriage. But should those roles be reversed? If they were, how would men react? This week the Dudes discuss making the first move and more with guest Emma Johnson @JohnsonEmma, journalist, blogger and and radio host, best known for her blog, WealthySingleMommy.com For more from Emma Johnson: Twitter - https://twitter.com/JohnsonEmma FB - https://www.facebook.com/WealthySingleMommy Blog - http://www.wealthysinglemommy.com/ The Dudes higher purpose is for everyone, and especially men, to ‘Leave Their Mark for The Good of All.’ Through transformational concepts, personal sharing, and playfulness the Dudes cover a wide range of topics to support disrupting the automatics we encounter personally and in our organizations, so we can be self expressed and live the lives we’ve always desired. The man is supposed to pay, right? Say’s who? With all this women’s independence how has this one rule stuck with us? What about #chivalry in general? Are men still aware of the power of doing such simple things as holding a door or pulling out a chair? This week the Dudes disrupt the thinking of what society says we should do as an automatic as it relates to modern relationships and chivalry. The “honeymoon is over” isn’t just a saying. That hot, steamy beginning of our relationships often fades and fades fast once a commitment is made. So what happens, and more importantly who’s responsible? Men love to blame their women for the lack of sex in their relationships, but we know that’s a cop out. Listen to the Dudes take on how Men relate to sex inside of their committed relationships. The Dudes higher purpose is for everyone, and especially men, to ‘Leave Their Mark for The Good of All.’ Through transformational concepts, personal sharing, and playfulness the Dudes cover a wide range of topics to support disrupting the automatics we encounter personally and in our organizations, so we can be self expressed and live the lives we’ve always desired. Everyone knows you can't build things in America anymore. Everyone, that is, except John D. Bassett III, Chairman of Vaughan-Bassett Co, and author of the new book, Making It In America. The Dudes had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Mr. Bassett on the show floor of NY Market Expo on May 25th, 2016. A true American Businessman, John discusses the motivation behind the book, his "5 Great Rules of Competition", Leadership & Teamwork. A true example of the grit that this country was founded on, he is a believer that our country is still the Greatest in the World, and that you CAN make it here. As men, much of who we are, or who we think we are is informed by our relationship with the man who made us, our father. Whether he was present and engaged, disconnected, or not in our life at all, the relationship with our father has a great impact on us as men, husbands and fathers to our own children. How do you define success? This week the Dudes take a look at at what holds us back from being successful, at least in our own minds. Often fear is at play, but what is it that we are truly afraid of? Culturally we have success wired with how much money we make or what we have achieved or what we own. Too many times that chase of material things leaves us unsatisfied, still searching for fulfillment. It’s time to disrupt what the true measure of success should be. Men have it hard. Society and history has dictated we need to be a certain way. We are taught from little boys to “tough it out” or to “man up”. Of course those ideas had a place in time and still do, but do they work for us as individuals? Being unstoppable is about getting clear on what you are committed to. Are you committed to being “right” about something or are you committed to being happy? Look at your life… Men, what are your commitments around money, women, relationships, success, family, and more. This week the Dudes peel back the layers of what’s holding men back from living their lives to the fullest. Following up on last week’s show, College: Opt-In or Drop Out, the Dudes take a deeper look at higher education and finding the right fit for you personally. There are alternatives, not only in our college years but throughout life to be continually learning and growing. Educating ourselves doesn’t have to stop, ever. What’s important is playing to your strengths and what speaks to you, as it’s In those places you are likely to excel. In addition, we’ll discuss responsibility and judgment around financing education, taking control and not playing victim to the system. With the rising cost of higher education heading into the hundreds of thousands, has college become a luxury for the privileged? Is it fair to have kids graduating with crushing amounts of debt and bleak prospects in the job market? The effects are long term, causing cultural effects like less homeownership, less likelihood to start families and in some cases parents not having retirement money due to paying tuition for their kids. Education needs to be disrupted and several politicians feel the same way, but it’s an uphill battle. This week the Dudes take a look at the current educational climate, and whether a degree as necessary now as it once was. There’s an old joke that goes, “marriage is an institution… A mental institution.” Funny but the general sentiment is that there is some truth to this. For many, marriage is a must to justify and formalize a loving relationship. But for others it is exactly that, a formality and an outdated one at that. This week the Dudes discuss relationships of all types. Whether Monogamous, PolyAmorous, Same Sex, with or without children or otherwise, shouldn’t we have the right to choose what works for us, without judgment? Dudes of Disruption

Much has been said lately about the rise of women both culturally and professionally. Women are more successful, independent, and driven than ever before in our history. Yet there is still a feeling that a glass ceiling remains, women are still paid less for the same jobs men do. Did you even know March is Women’s History Month? In our current presidential race, Hillary Clinton is the frontrunner with a real shot at being the first female president, so why does it seem there isn’t a huge rally around her by women? This week the Dudes will look at feminism and perceptions of women from many angles, from the disruptors to where there are still gaps. What makes a team win? The question seems simple. Many times we look to the leader, and of course there is a need for someone to be at the helm of a great team. But winning leaders know that a truly great team is the sum of it’s parts. The Dudes will take a look at what it really takes to win. Whether it be at a company, in a marriage or business partnership, or in a band or sports team. We are all parts of teams, but many times we feel like we have to go it alone. What could be possible if we all embraced partnership in order to achieve greater success? In 2016 race continues to be a hot button topic and still causes division amongst people. We are in an image conscious society. Every day we're bombarded with images and ideals that culturally are the accepted norms for what beauty is. The way others appear on the outside has us immediately forming an opinion about them, without knowing anything about them as a person. Their weight, skin color, clothes, hair or height all come into play and have a judgment attached to them, and that judgment is automatic, without realizing we do it. We have it that women and men should look a certain way. But what way is that? In this week’s show The Dudes will take on appearance and how some people are turning the norm on it’s head. From plus size models on the cover of sports illustrated to men & women refusing to accept what the media tells us and our youth what beautiful is. Joining the Dudes in studio is Sulma Arzu-Brown, Author of Bad Hair Does Not Exist!, a new bilingual book that encourages young Black, Afro-Latino, and multi-racial girls to see themselves, and their hair, as beautiful. As the Presidential Race heats up and both parties get closer to finding their chosen candidate, one thing is clear: There is major disruption going on in politics and people are getting frustrated again. Inside of this disruption, do voters believe they can actually make a difference by getting engaged and even voting? With that sentiment comes a lot of resignation on our part, and rightfully so. Does our vote really matter? Can things really change for the better? Or, do we believe deep down that we are getting the same candidate again. This week The Dudes will discuss what happens when we become resigned and feel powerless and it goes way beyond choosing the leader of the free world. *TOP 10 Podcast In Self-Help on Podomatic! Sports are a very dominant and defining part of our culture, whether it be playing or watching them. There are also a lot of stereotypes around sports as well: Dudes need to like sports, athletes are stupid jocks, girls who are into sports are tomboys, and if you’re a man and you aren’t into sports, well you’re just weird. These hangups are ingrained in us at a young age, and stick with us for the rest of our lives. The term leadership is thrown around all the time - so, what does it really mean? In a world that's changing at record speed, what kind of leadership is needed today at work and beyond? From the time we are young, we hear stories of success by those who choose to be a leader. What leadership looks like today however is very different from the traditional views of the past. This shift has seen the rise of more thoughtful leaders, who give everyone around them the space to take charge and to be unleashed. At school, work or home we all have an opportunity to lead, whether we clearly have that role or not - at any moment you can be a leader. This week the Dudes will deliver rules of Disruptive Leadership and how to apply them, while taking a look at people who have stood out because they took risks and redefined the norm. Inspired by a video called 48 Things Men Hear In A Lifetime (That Are Bad For Everyone), the Dudes look at how men are perceived and the impact those beliefs have on how men show up in the world. For many men, the things we are told as children often sets the stage for our beliefs about ourselves that can be disempowering as we carry them through our adulthood. In an ever evolving world, does the role of a man which was defined centuries ago still serve the world? Today's world is demanding a different type of man to show up. So, What does it mean to be man today and how do men show up powerfully inside of this new paradigm? The Dudes share from personal experiences the impact that the traditional beliefs around men have had on them. In the end, we hope to understand the power of our beliefs and our relationship to what it means to be a man and how we can shift them to a place that serves the world differently. We all start the new year with the promise of a fresh start, and the claims that “this will be the best year yet”. Our resolutions often read like a to-do list, and they’re likely many of the things you promised yourself would happen the year before. What is missing for most is the “why”. For example, we don’t think about why we want to lose weight or get healthier. It’s about leading a healthier life, and being there for our loved ones. That’s the why. The Dudes discuss that having a clear vision to a higher purpose and commitment to something larger than yourself, allows the space to be created for you to really make a difference way beyond your New Year's resolutions. As each year comes to a close, we become reflective on the past 12 months and look forward to the promise of that fresh start on January 1st. The process of completion and celebration is an important one, yet often one we overlook in many areas of our lives. As we approach the close of 2015 we're all caught up in a lot of doing with the end of year Holiday rush. Suddenly we’re aware of the homeless and those who have hit challenging times, giving gifts, being thoughtful, connecting with friends and family while getting in the “spirit”. It’s almost as if there’s a holiday switch that gets turned on around this time. But why only now? What would be possible if we could “be” in that spirit all year round? The Dudes are back with another disruptive, unapologetic, and fun show. This week's topic highlights that when our commitment is to fit in, it gets in the way of playing a big game in life. Ever wonder why you may be playing a small game or holding yourself back? The Dudes explore how sometimes we make ourselves smaller or take a back seat to others because we want to avoid surpassing, avoid being different and avoid from sticking out from your parents, siblings, friends, or coworkers. Often we have it that falling in line and playing small can create the illusion that we are safe and sound. And something gets lost and sacrificed when we are in that experience. This week the Dudes discuss the payoffs and the costs of making ourselves smaller and how we can tap into the things we can do to truly be ourselves and unleashed.
