In this episode of Sex, Addiction, and the Missing Peace, host Ken Donaldson shares about the startling absence of sexual addiction information available on some major government health and resources websites (SAMSHA and CDC) and why that might be. Additionally, Ken reports on 4 books, The Vagina Bible, The Penis Book, Sex and Punishment, and Media Sex: What Are The Issues? He gives a brief overview of each book and how they could be helpful in the role of becoming better educated about sex, thereby, making it easier and more normal to talk about sex.
If we can't or don't talk about sex, including the vagina and the penis, and all the other sexual parts of us, how can we ever expect to have a conversation about something like sexual addiction?!! (Which might be part of the reason the SAMSHA and CDC websites don't have anything about sexual addiction on them...think about it.)
Ken also introduces a recent piece of research entitled, "Effects of Media on Sexual Behaviors," from The International Encyclopedia of Media Psychology. From this research, we learn that the sexual content in traditional media tends to sexually objectify "gender scripts." Furthermore, these scripts are typically supportive of a heterosexual perspective in which males are seen as being sex-focused and non-committed and females are made out to be submissive and appearance-focused.
The focus of all this is that we live in a culture that is not very open with the subject-matter of sex, and yet we have more and more sexualization in traditional media surrounding us every day through song lyrics, advertising, and music videos, just to name a few.
Ken’s solution: We need to bring more education and have more conversations about sex (and addiction, but let's cover sex first) if we ever expect to have a healthier sexual culture.
As always, this episode of Sex, Addiction, and the Missing Peace was recorded unrehearsed and is a little rough (including an alert on the computer that goes off about halfway through...geez!). We welcome your questions, comments, and feedback.

Thank you for listening.
