Today I wanted to address all the generational programs that we have experienced as children growing up with well-meaning parents, who were just repeating the same stories that was repeated to them when they were children. These often include ideas around, keeping us from verbalizing our emotions, sharing our emotions or processing them in a way that makes other people uncomfortable.
When it really comes down to it, most of our parents were trying so hard to keep us from sharing our emotions because they didn’t know what to do with us when we did and they didn’t know how to feel when they experienced anger or sadness or uncontrollable, crying from their child. This is a pattern that continues to go down the line in so many different cultures, and so many different generations. Luckily, for those of us that our parents in the last 20 years, we kind of have a different approach where we are open to allowing our children to feel their emotions and in turn- share them with us.
This will be paramount as we continue on this path. But for now it is super comforting to know that we have an opportunity to actually heal those programs from our generational line by doing the work ourselves, and it truly is so inspirational to know that we can change generational patterns.
