“Home – dedicated to those of you who have managed to pull yourselves out of the quicksand and find happiness and not forget where you’ve come from.” ― Eric Alexandrakis, about his latest single “Home”

Lisa and Michael are thrilled to host the incredibly talented Eric Alexandrakis, a two-time Grammy-nominated artist whose work spans music, storytelling, and historical exploration. Eric’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the quest for happiness, themes that resonate deeply in his latest single, “Home.”

On this episode, Eric shares a poignant story about his family’s history in Crete during World War II, a narrative that has profoundly shaped his life and artistic expression. We delve into the incredible project that Dr. George Alexandrakis, Eric’s father, undertook in the summer of 2024 —uncovering and honoring the legacy of 18 civilians, including his family members, who were executed by Nazi forces during World War II. The project to match the massacre remains to surviving family members through DNA analysis has been hailed as one of the most important in Greece in the last 50 years. The effort was led and sponsored by the Alexandrakis family, is a collaboration between Dr. George Alexandrakis, the University of Crete, and the Foundation of Technology and Research (HTE). The project not only helped to bring closure to an 83-year-old wound, but to also created awareness of many forgotten injustices that have taken place, not only in Greece, but worldwide.

This moving episode explores the intersection of music, history, and personal growth. Our conversation touches on the emotional process of creating music that reflects personal and historical experiences. Eric’s single “Home” has received rave reviews for its depth and emotional resonance. It is a heartfelt narrative that serves as a tribute to those who have overcome adversity and found happiness without forgetting their roots.

Eric Alexandrakis’ journey is a reminder of the enduring power of love and the importance of remembering where we come from. We know you will find inspiration in Eric’s story, which is not just about personal discovery and artistic expression, but also about the broader message of love and peace. As Eric eloquently puts it, “Home is a metaphor for happiness. Wherever you find happiness, you find home.”

2024 yielded results from a personal family project which the Greek press have called “The most important thing to happen to Greece in 50 years.” Some years ago while researching for a project on his family, Eric had the idea to perform DNA analyses on 18 civilians who were executed in his father’s village of Adele on Crete, as reprisals for Cretan resistance during the WWII Battle of Crete. Four of the victims were Eric’s grandfather, his great-grandfather, and two uncles. With the help of scientists from the University of Crete, the family funded the analysis matching victim remains to living relatives.
