Send us a text Ever feel like you're stuck in the gravitational pull of your own comfort zone, orbiting the same problems like a satellite doomed to reruns of its own past mistakes? You’re not alone. Avoiding the Comfort Trap isn’t about radical, reckless change as much as it’s about understanding why we cling to familiarity, even when it holds us back, and how to break free without setting off existential alarm bells. In this episode, my friend and colleague Jo Groves, joined by a live audience, take a deep dive into why behavior change is so complicated and why simply knowing what to do isn’t enough. From suspending assumptions to the sneaky hidden commitments that conflict with our stated goals, we’ll explore how our internal arguments for and against change play out every single day. We’ll break down the dynamic systems that shape our choices, and how our values, behaviors, environment, and social determinants of changes shape us. Discover why crafting a compelling vision of the future (or revisiting the past to find what truly mattered) is essential to meaningful transformation. But it’s not just about dreaming big, it’s about starting small. Change often happens through incremental wins, building self-efficacy, and isolating key variables instead of trying to overhaul your entire life overnight. We’ll explore tools like decisional balance sheet, motivational interviewing, and other models that support a deeper understanding of yourself, your clients, and how to facilitate change talk. Speaking of talk, let's not forget the role of language, the words we use to describe ourselves are powerful predictors of behavior change. When we shift from "I should" to "I will," "I am," and "I have," we’re no longer just talking about change, we’re preparing to engage in it. We’ll talk about why we need mavericks, in every industry, in every field; people willing to challenge norms, ask better questions, and create a culture where empathy fuels evolution instead of judgment reinforcing stagnation. So, what’s the one thing you’re going to work on changing? Let’s get to it. Because avoiding the comfort trap isn’t about making life harder, it’s about making it matter. Send us a text In this episode, we’re joined by two remarkable artists who are using creativity to transform lives and communities: Shaah, founder of the creative collective GRYSKLL, and Quentin Fountain, also known as Q. aka Media Pimp, an eMCee, producer, and engineer. Together, they share powerful stories of trauma, resilience, and the healing potential of art. Shaah, a former member of Wu-Tang’s “Tha Beggas,” brings a multi-dimensional perspective to the conversation, with a background spanning music, film, photography, and writing. Through GRYSKLL, launched in 2021, Shaah has built a supportive community around creative expression and mental health. His latest project, gryMatter, is a documentary endeavor aimed at capturing his journey of healing through creativity, featuring mixtapes, books, and a unique soundtrack. Q., who returned to music after two decades away, reflects on the life-changing events that led him back to his craft. Reconnecting with old friends and joining GRYSKLL rekindled his passion and eventually brought him into audio engineering, where he has become GRYSKLL's lead engineer and a vital contributor to the collective’s sound. His single Bleeding Out marked a profound return, and he now continues to shape the sonic landscape of GRYSKLL, with a new EP on the horizon. Together, Shaah and Q. dive into the ways unresolved trauma, and the psychological impact of adverse childhood experiences, like growing up in poverty have shaped their lives, and how making music has been an anchor and light in dark times. They discuss the importance of social support, the courage to connect, and how creativity offers a way to express pain, recognize struggles in others, and build resilience. From growing up under challenging circumstances to finding belonging and purpose through community, Shaah and Q. explore how the worst experiences can give rise to profound growth. Through GRYSKLL, they are not only telling their stories but fostering a community where people feel safe, seen, and heard. This episode is an exploration of how art and community can turn pain into purpose, and the courage it takes to keep showing up, helping others, and ultimately finding healing in the process. Join us for an inspiring conversation on the transformative power of creativity, connection, and courage. Visit us at: www.theselfhelpantidote.com…
Send us a text In this episode, Tiff and I are taking on the ever-persistent hustle culture, where busyness is celebrated as success, and exhaustion is often the reward. We’ll explore the real costs of endless grinding and how it can distract us from what genuinely matters. This isn't about scaling back ambitions but recalibrating them, diving into ways to improve our focus, identify our core values, and ensure our goals align with them. Drawing from Buddhist philosophy, we’ll discuss the art of being present and letting go of what doesn’t serve us. We’ll also look at how new experiences, travel, learning, or even small changes in routine, can give us fresh perspectives, helping us see the world and our place in it with renewed clarity. And, we talk about cats, because we like cats, and they are our teachers, showing us how to balance our lives with rest and play. If you’ve ever felt burned out on a path that wasn’t yours, this episode is the antidote. Visit us at: www.theselfhelpantidote.com…
Send us a text In this episode, we’re diving into the subject of empathy vs. sympathy, because in coaching and leadership, these two are not the same. It's not so much that empathy fails, but the confusion of empathy with sympathy that's the problem. Think of empathy as that friend who shows up with pizza when you’re stressed, while sympathy just sends you a sad-face emoji and a “Thoughts and Prayers” text. One builds connection, the other builds... well, awkward silence. We’ll unpack why empathy is the lifeblood of successful coaching and leadership, allowing you to actually " get" your clients and team, rather than just feel sorry for them. When you lead with empathy, you create space for trust, growth, and change—transforming your client’s journey and your career into a masterpiece of connection and results. But sympathy? It’s the well-meaning yet potentially damaging relationship dynamic that often makes things worse. Instead of empowering, sympathy traps your client in a “Poor You” narrative, as if they’ve just auditioned for the world's saddest soap opera. Nobody wins an Emmy for that. Seeing people as either unwilling or unable to change, void of agency is not exactly a trust and rapport builder. So, let’s explore how this game-changer can make your client see the superhero within them, and position you for success in your career. Because when you master empathy, not only do you get to help people become their best selves, you also become the kind of coach who gets results. Visit us at: www.theselfhelpantidote.com…
Send us a text In this episode, we explore one of the most critical yet often overlooked skills for coaches: emotional self-regulation. Emotions drive decisions and behaviors more than any other aspect of mindset, and your emotional energy as a coach can either create an atmosphere of trust and growth or lead to barriers that hinder your client’s progress. Drawing on insights from affective neuroscience, we discuss how innate emotions like fear, anger, and love influence not only your clients but also your own coaching effectiveness. We’ll break down the science behind emotions, referencing the work of experts like Jaak Panksepp and Joseph LeDoux, and show how emotions are contagious, shaping the dynamic of your coaching sessions, whether you realize it or not. You’ll also learn actionable techniques to manage your emotional state through mindfulness, pre-session rituals, and reflective practices to ensure you’re bringing the best energy into every client interaction. Plus, we dive into real-world examples, highlighting how emotional states—both yours and your client’s—affect decision-making, goal-setting, and the overall coaching journey. Tune in to discover how mastering your emotions can elevate your coaching practice and lead to deeper, more impactful client outcomes. Visit us at: www.theselfhelpantidote.com…

1 The Wellbeing Advantage: How Prioritizing Wellness Transforms Client Relationships and Elevates Business Performance 49:30
Send us a text In this episode, we explore why prioritizing wellbeing isn't just a "nice to have"—it's a critical business strategy. Drawing inspiration from the visionary leadership of Walt Disney, we look at how businesses that proactively focus on wellbeing, like Walt saw Epcot long before it was built, can anticipate and solve hidden challenges before they surface. Wellbeing is more than offering gym memberships or wellness programs—it's about creating a culture where people feel valued, supported, and connected. We’ll delve into how organizations can elevate their value by making wellbeing a cornerstone of their business relationships. Through stories, insights from thought leaders like Seth Godin, and real-life examples, we’ll discuss why businesses that embed wellbeing into their DNA become indispensable partners for their clients. From addressing unseen issues like stress and burnout to building trust and transparency, we'll explore how wellbeing partnerships unlock long-term success. Whether you’re a business leader, coach, or just interested in enhancing workplace culture, this episode will offer strategies to foster lasting client relationships through wellbeing, turning your organization into a trusted and invaluable partner. Send us a text In this episode, we dive into one of the biggest obstacles coaches face when helping clients navigate change—the righting reflex. The instinct to "fix" or "correct" can create resistance, damage trust, and ultimately slow down the process of change. We'll explore why it’s crucial to avoid this reflex and instead guide clients to discover their own path to transformation. We also unpack the concept of ambivalence, a natural state where clients may feel torn between conflicting desires or values. Rather than pushing for change, coaches can skillfully work with ambivalence using tools like the decisional balance sheet. This simple yet powerful tool allows clients to weigh the pros and cons of their choices, helping them clarify their own reasons for change and commit to a course of action that aligns with their values. Join us as we explore how recognizing these psychological dynamics and empowering clients to resolve their own ambivalence can lead to lasting, meaningful change. Visit us at: www.theselfhelpantidote.com…
Send us a text How does lasting behavior change happen, and where’s the evidence to support it? In this episode, we break down the science of behavior change using the analogy of climbing a hill—because like any steep climb, the journey to change is hard, but preparation is just as important as taking that first step. We dive into three key models that help us understand the process of change: Motivational Interviewing , the Transtheoretical Model of Change , and Social Cognitive Theory . At the bottom of the hill, you’re in the pre-contemplation stage—thinking about change but not yet ready. We’ll explore how Motivational Interviewing helps guide clients through the DARN framework (Desire, Ability, Reasons, and Need) to build momentum. As you begin climbing, you face contemplation and preparation, stages two and three of the Transtheoretical Model. Overcoming ambivalence and building self-belief are key to reaching the other side. We’ll discuss how vicarious stories of success and environmental support from Social Cognitive Theory play a role in developing confidence to keep moving forward. Reaching the peak, you start to experience the action and maintenance stages (stages four and five), where change talk—fueled by CAT (Commitment, Activation, and Taking Steps)—begins to drive momentum. We’ll discuss the importance of reinforcement, positive feedback, and observational learning in sustaining progress. Finally, you’ll find yourself on the other side of the hill—the termination stage, where your new behaviors align with your identity. But remember: change is not linear. It’s not about perfection, it’s about progress, and every step forward is a victory in itself. Whether you’re a coach guiding others or someone on your own journey of change, this episode will equip you with the insights and evidence to help make that climb. Send us a text In this episode of The Self Help Antidote , Tiff and I dive into a topic that’s as essential as your morning coffee—setting boundaries. But let’s be real, it’s easier said than done, especially when your brain has been hardwired by a childhood that could have doubled as a Quentin Tarantino movie. I share a bit of my own story of growing up in a highly violent environment, where my worldview was shaped by survival instincts and a desperate need to people-please. Surprisingly, it wasn’t exactly a recipe for happiness. Ever wonder why you bend over backward to keep everyone else happy, even when it’s slowly killing your joy? Well, it turns out that the way we interpret our childhood experiences can screw with how we see other people. We’ll unpack that together and dive into the concept of post-traumatic growth—because yes, it is possible to rise from the ashes of a scorched identity, even if you feel more like burnt toast than you do the phoenix some days. Here’s the thing: voicing your pain can actually lighten the load. It’s like finally admitting that the milk in the fridge has gone bad—it stinks, but you can finally toss it out. Painful emotions are your mind’s way of waving a red flag, signaling that some basic human needs are going unmet. The trick is learning to be self-aware and holding yourself accountable—because, let’s face it, if you’re not keeping score, the body sure is. And trust me, the body is like that ex who never forgets a thing. We’ll explore the somatic side of our experiences—how your body reacts when your mind is freaking out—and how emotional regulation can be your secret weapon. Notice how your behavior shifts when you’re stressed? It’s not just in your head; it’s in your whole being. Besides, knowing that a thought isn’t true doesn’t make it any less real. It just means your brain is really good at its job—unfortunately, sometimes it’s like the employee of the month who takes their role way too seriously. We’ll also tackle the impact of having to censor yourself as a kid. It’s like growing up with the mute button permanently pressed—eventually, you forget how to speak up for yourself. This leads to all sorts of misconceptions about what boundaries really mean and makes you a fortune teller of doom when it comes to predicting how others will react. But don’t worry, we’ll bust those myths wide open. Now, let’s talk about belonging—a basic human need that’s as important as Wi-Fi. Belonging intersects with every other need, and understanding this can help you get to the root causes of your behavior. We’ll even take a shot at defining what wellbeing really means. Hint: it’s not just about green smoothies and yoga, though those don’t hurt. Unless you like me, about as flexible as a crowbar, then yoga really hurts. And if you’re feeling like you’ve lost the joy in what you once loved, or your performance has tanked, it might be time to reassess those boundaries. You can’t pour from an empty cup, and to be of value to others, you’ve got to take care of yourself first. Oh, and we can’t forget Tiffanee—she doesn’t just sleep; she hibernates like a bear. Maybe that’s what we all need—a little more hibernation to show up as the people we want to be, instead of just surviving, we should be thriving. So, grab a cup of something strong, and let’s get real about boundaries. It’s time to put yourself first, not because you’re selfish, but because you’re worth it. Visit us at: www.theselfhelpantidote.com…
Send us a text In this episode of "The Self Help Antidote," we're diving into the nuanced difference between opinions and beliefs. Sure, everyone has an opinion, but a belief? That’s a whole different ball game. And to illustrate just how wide that gap can be, we’re revisiting a legendary moment in history. Imagine it’s 1859, and you’re part of a massive crowd watching Charles Blondin, the daredevil tightrope walker, make his death-defying journey across Niagara Falls. The crowd erupts in cheers as he successfully crosses the raging waters. He then asks, "Do you believe I can do it again?" The crowd roars with enthusiasm. But then, he ups the ante—he pulls out a wheelbarrow and asks, "Who’s willing to hop in and cross with me?" Suddenly, the crowd falls silent. Everyone had an opinion that Blondin could make the journey, but when it came to belief—real belief—they weren’t so sure. This story underscores the difference between easy opinions and hard-earned beliefs. Opinions are like those effortless likes on social media—quick, easy, and often meaningless. But beliefs? Beliefs require skin in the game. They demand commitment and manifest in our actions. So, how do we know if our beliefs are truly driving change? It starts with self-awareness. Are your beliefs pushing you toward positive actions? Are they making a difference in your life and the lives of those around you? Or are they just opinions in disguise, lacking the power to make a real impact? We’ll also explore why we sometimes cling to beliefs that don’t serve us or others. Using Maslow’s hierarchy of needs as a guide, we’ll examine the underlying motivations behind our actions and the hidden drivers of our behavior. We’ll discuss how our unmet needs can lead to self-sabotage and how we can align our actions with our true desires to create meaningful change. Join us as we challenge you to get into that metaphorical wheelbarrow, examine your beliefs, and take a step toward becoming the best version of yourself. Because in a world full of opinions, maybe what we need are more people willing to act on their beliefs. Visit us at: www.theselfhelpantidote.com…

Send us a text Let's be real: the only time we'll be completely stress-free is when we're done and dusted, pushing up daisies, or whatever euphemism you prefer for the great beyond. Stress is part of the contract we signed when we decided to exist. Ok, maybe that's a bit rich, but stress is in fact an unavoidable part of life. It's a healthy, sometimes annoying, at it's worst a debilitating health risk, but ultimately it's purpose is to evoke a beneficial response to our environment. But hold on, since the dawn of time both we and our surroundings have undergone some serious upgrades. Now, instead of casually hunting mammoths, we're perpetually switched on, plugged in, chasing after modern-day lions (read: jobs, businesses, and inbox), and sprinting away from metaphorical bears (deadlines, bills, and Karen from accounting). So, how do we manage all this? How do we keep our sanity in check while juggling flaming swords and riding a unicycle on a tightrope? How do we lead ourselves and be led by ourselves without looking like confused tourists lost in the stress city of life? In this episode, Tiff and I, R. Andrew Pacuccio (we will explain that on the show) are tackling the ultimate paradox: we have all the answers, yet we can't seem to follow our own advice. Why do we keep white-knuckling it, doing things we'd never recommend to a client, employee, or friend, only to smash into that inevitable wall? Spoiler alert: it’s because we’re human, and humans are hilariously complex. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride of self-reflection, laughter, and maybe a few "aha!" moments as we explore the wild world of stress management. We'll share stories, tips, and a healthy dose of humor to help you navigate work and life without losing your marbles. So grab your coffee (or something stronger), sit back, and let's dive into the madness together! Visit us at: www.theselfhelpantidote.com…

Send us a text Despite the enormous body of information on behavior change, many people find changing unwanted behaviors—whether around weight loss, work, or relationships—to be among the most frustrating and elusive struggles in their lives. The National Institutes of Health reports that 97% of individuals who set a goal of weight loss will either fail to lose the weight or keep it off for a span of five years. Social media is filled with self-help gurus who often blame this on a lack of inner attributes. But what if that’s a completely false narrative? Psychologists call this perspective an attribution error, where we assume someone’s failure to change is due to a lack of character rather than external factors. In this episode, I share my own experiences and struggles with behavior change, debunking common misconceptions that hinder our progress. We’ll explore how external factors, information overload, and conflicting advice, among other things, can make behavior change seem impossible. Drawing from personal stories and psychological insights, we’ll delve into proven strategies that can help you make meaningful changes in your life. If you have ever struggled with behavior change or are seeking to change some aspect of your life but feel apprehensive based on past experiences, lack of confidence, or simply not knowing what to do, this episode is for you. I will share insights that will help eliminate the guesswork from behavior change. This will save you time, energy, and frustration while giving you the confidence and power to make the changes that support what you value most in your work and life. Send us a text In this episode, we delve into the world of leadership coaching, exploring the evidence-based theories that underpin its effectiveness. Coaching is a powerful tool for personal and professional development, leveraging psychological and social dynamics to foster growth and change. We begin by discussing scientific coaching models and theories that emphasize learning, growth and development. Some of the core theories that make coaching so effective, that we discuss in this episode are: Motivational Interviewing (MI): A client-centered approach enhances intrinsic motivation by exploring and resolving ambivalence. Appreciative Inquiry (AI): Focusing on strengths and successes fosters positive change and builds confidence. Self-Determination Theory (SDT): Understand how coaching satisfies the innate psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness to drive growth. Social Cognitive Theory (SCT): Explore the importance of observational learning, imitation, and modeling in behavior change. Transtheoretical Model of Change (TTM): Gain insights into how coaching addresses different stages of change with tailored support and interventions. We also discuss the unique benefits of integrating these theories into the coaching process, creating a holistic support system that enhances motivation, learning, and behavior change. Send us a text In this enlightening episode, I have a chat with my old friend and colleague, John Sinclair about one of the most powerful, yet under appreciated aspects of success and fulfillment, movement. John is a renowned expert in movement as medicine, leveraging his diverse background as an educator, coach, athletic trainer, medical exercise specialist, and applied functional scientist to create unique health and performance programs. He has worked globally as a consultant for professional sports teams, governments, and companies like ViPR Pro, Zumba, and Nike, and served as a Health and Performance consultant for the California State Guard. As a sought-after expert in the health and fitness industries, John directs programming at The Institute of Motion and has developed comprehensive personal training and performance specialist certifications. Residing in Sunrise, Florida, with his wife and labradoodle, he enjoys golf, tennis, weightlifting, and various other fitness activities in his personal training studio. Our discussion unfolds the layers of today's fitness landscape, marked by the paradox of being increasingly time-poor and stressed, yet flooded with conflicting information about the "right" paths to health. We explore the intriguing concept of micro-dosing movement, a revolutionary application designed for those struggling with consistent exercise routines. This method, akin to programming for a sport, aims to prepare individuals for their daily activities through small, manageable doses of movement, leading to significant health outcomes. This approach is beautifully encapsulated in the book “7 Movements to Keep You Healthy and Pain-Free in the Office,” by Dan Tatton and John Sinclair, which emphasizes the power of micro movements in supporting overall health. Our conversation delves into the challenges many face in starting their fitness journey, overwhelmed by where to begin. We discuss strategies and tools developed in collaboration with esteemed researchers like Dr. Martin Gibala, author of “The One-Minute Workout,” and Dr. Jonathan Little, highlighting the tailored needs of individuals with conditions such as Parkinson’s, Type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Remarkably, adherence to micro-dosing movement boasts a 94 percent success rate, underscoring the transformative impact of engaging in small, enjoyable doses of activity. We unravel the psychology behind exercise adherence, emphasizing the role of successful participation in boosting confidence and shaping identity. This episode challenges conventional wisdom about motivation, accountability, and the physiological expectations from exercise, advocating for a personalized approach to fitness that recognizes the uniqueness of each individual. The conversation shifts to the importance of getting started, the influence of expectations on long-term motivation, and the significance of aligning exercise with personal values and visions for the future. We highlight the critical relationship between efficacy and behavior, and the role of sensory input in enhancing motor control and engagement in cherished activities. Forbes magazine, in their audit of the model, rated the programming on micro-dosing movement with the highest acclaim. This episode is not just about the mechanics of movement but the profound impact of purposeful activity on our lives. Join us as we connect John and explore the wealth of resources available at www.sevenmovements.com , embarking on a journey to redefine what it means to live a healthy, engaged life through the lens of micro-dosing movement. 1 The Power of Thought: Unleashing Critical Thinking as an Antidote of Manipulation and Deception 18:35
Send us a text Welcome, to a special episode of The Self Help Antidote, where we take you behind the velvet curtain of the most enchanting, bewildering show on Earth—the 'Problem-Reaction-Solution' spectacle. Imagine, if you will, a stage where the problems are as abundant as the stars, reactions are the currency, and solutions? Well, they're the magic trick everyone's waiting to see. But in this episode, we're not just spectators; we're going backstage to uncover the secrets of the world's worst magic trick. Act One: The Setup - The Great Problem Prestidigitation We kick things off with a dive into the art of problem manufacturing. Picture a magician, suave and confident, pulling problems out of a hat like rabbits—but these rabbits are a little different. They're custom-bred to startle, to alarm, to create the perfect storm of panic. We explore how issues, some as thin as air, are inflated into balloons of dread, ready to be popped by the pointed needle of public outcry. Act Two: The Turn - Mass Hysteria Choreography Next, we waltz into the reaction phase, where the audience's gasp is part of the performance. It's a dance of distress, expertly choreographed to the tune of sensational headlines and viral videos. Imagine the collective heartbeat of the crowd, racing, as they're led to believe the stage is set for catastrophe. We dissect how reactions are amplified, echoing through the grand hall of our global theater, until the call for a hero becomes the chorus of our shared song. Act Three: The Prestige - The Grand Solution Reveal And then, the moment we've all been waiting for: the solution. Like a magician revealing the secret compartment, solutions appear with a flourish, seemingly perfect, pristine, and precisely what the audience craves. But who does this grand reveal truly benefit? We peel back the curtain on the solution's sleight of hand, questioning who's pulling the strings and who's paying for the magic wand. Intermission: A Lesson in Illusion Detection Midway through our show, we'll teach you how to spot the illusion before the magician even takes the stage. We'll equip you with the tools to question the narrative, to see beyond the smoke and mirrors, and to recognize when the problem is part of the act, the reaction is scripted, and the solution is anything but magical. Encore: Breaking the Spell Our grand finale isn't just about unveiling the trickery; it's about empowering you, the audience, to become the magicians of your own lives. We'll share strategies for critical thinking, for questioning the narrative, and for finding genuine solutions in a world that too often prefers the illusion of action to the hard work of real change. So, step right up to the grandest show of them all, where we're not just audience members but active participants in unraveling the grand illusion. It's time to take your seat, dim the lights, and prepare to be amazed—not by the trick, but by the truth behind it. Welcome to the 'Problem-Reaction-Solution' show, where the only thing you're competing for is the chance to not lose your mind, and perhaps, take back your autonomy. Send us a text Alright, here we go, strap in! She's back! This episode, me and Tiffanee Cook, we're going headfirst, I mean, like diving into a pool with no water, into some seriously personal stuff. You know, the kind that makes you go, "Whoa, this is a big issue, what am I doing here?" Lately I've been going through life busier than a one legged river dancer, and it's about time I started looking at what I need. Sound familiar? Anyone? And Tiff, we're in the middle of a conversation, and she just slams this question on the table like a steak at a vegan party - how the heck do you keep giving to others without completely losing yourself, and maybe your mind in the process? Where's that line where you're being generous versus self-abandonment? Then we get into this minefield called trust, especially with the people you're supposed to be close to. Tiff's got her take on throwing trust around like it's confetti, and let me tell you, it's not just about trusting other people. It's about trusting yourself, which, let's be honest, can be harder than finding a parking spot in New York City. And don't even get me started on self-forgiveness and owning up to your mess-ups. That hit me harder than a hangover on New Year's Day. But hey, it wasn't all heavy. We talked about the magic of just being in the moment, you know, smelling the roses, or whatever flower you're into. It's about noticing the little things that make life less of a dumpster fire. This chat with Tiff, it's like those little reminders life gives you that it's all about how your perspective and values shape the journey, it's about deciding who you are, and maybe, just maybe, enjoying the ride a bit. Send us a text In this thought-provoking episode of "The Self Help Antidote," we delve into the contentious and complex debate over human free will. We explore the philosophical underpinnings of free will, as traditionally espoused by thinkers like Descartes, contrasted with the revelations of modern neuroscience. Special guest, Clinical Neuropsychologist Roy Sugarman, author of “Saving Your Life, One Day at a Time” and “Client Centered Training”, offers his insights into how our brains are wired, discussing the ongoing battle between our limbic system and what he terms the 'janitorial' parts of our brain. This intricate dance between the fast, often inaccurate instincts and our slower, more deliberate thought processes illuminates the nuances of our decision-making processes. The episode then turns to the fascinating interplay of emotions and thinking, examining how some people appear to exert greater free will, while others seem more constrained. We use the example of Oskar Schindler to illustrate how individuals navigate complex moral and ethical landscapes. Further, we investigate the influence of hormones and stress on our propensity to believe in conspiracy theories, and how our ancestry and prenatal hormone exposure might shape our behavior. We probe into why we're so vested in others' actions and the pervasive market for misinformation, highlighting the human tendency to hold beliefs without understanding their origins. This leads to a discussion on cognitive biases and psychological inflexibility, underscoring the importance of education in fostering psychological flexibility and self-reflection. In a more introspective segment, we explore the value of doing the difficult yet right things, the art of self-forgiveness, and the significance of auditing our values. We examine intriguing cases such as kindness induced by an anterior pituitary tumor and the role of testosterone in altruism. Finally, we tackle the big questions: Is truth subjective? How can we reconcile cognitive biases? We explore theories like motivational interviewing, reactance theory, relational frame theory, and self-determination, concluding with the organizing principle of the brain's search for autonomy and efficacy, and how this relates to our values and identity. This episode is a deep dive into the irony of free will, offering listeners a multifaceted perspective on one of humanity's most enduring questions. Join us as we unravel the complex tapestry of free will, neuroscience, and the human psyche. Dr. Roy Sugarman is a cofounder of Transhuman Inc , a mental health prevention and intervention AI technology company operating in 87 countries holding international patents on the capture of human emotion. He is a founder and Head Neuroscientist for education technology company BoxPlay in the UK bridging intelligence and emotions via communication expertise. He is a sought-after keynote speaker both locally and internationally. Thank you, Enjoy Visit us at: www.theselfhelpantidote.com…

Send us a text Welcome back to the first episode of the year, with Alan Questel. Alan is a renown Feldenkrais practitioner, teacher and author. I found my conversation with him to be both enjoyable and deeply fascinating. I loved where the conversation went. Alan’s wisdom, authenticity and generosity added so much value to this episode. In the beginning of our conversation we delved into a myriad of thought-provoking topics inspired by Charles Bukowski's assertion that we often fail to be good to one another. We explored the environmental factors contributing to this phenomenon and how our self-image, deeply intertwined with our self-regard, plays a crucial role. An intriguing discussion began to unfold around the transformative power of physical movement and its impact on our self-perception, emphasizing the importance of moving in ways that resonate positively with us. We then navigate the paradox of finding it easier to extend kindness to others than to ourselves, underscoring the value of small acts of kindness in enhancing how we feel about ourselves. The conversation shifts to practical steps one can take to aid others and how these actions can catalyze personal growth. We dissect the notion that kindness often starts with small gestures and reflect on the ways we are already kind in our daily lives. Further, we examine how movement influences our thoughts and feelings, with a focus on its fundamental role in all our actions. The episode highlights the contrasting perspectives of observers and doers, proposing that kindness is born from action, which is inherently linked to movement. We then shifted the conversation to focus on the things we excel at in our daily routines and how mastering small tasks provides the confidence to tackle larger challenges. The discussion moves to the timeframe required for change, the significance of being present in the moment, and the positive impact of reducing self-criticism. The episode also offers insights into moments of self-reflection, strategies for evolving into the person we aspire to be in a year, and the potential within us. We delve into the pitfalls of the comparing mind, the tension between reality and expectations, and the quest for purpose. In another highly interesting shift, we explore Milton Erickson's work on Ericksonian Hypnosis, its implications on depression and perceived lack of choice, and the actions that can lead to meaningful change. We discuss demonstrations of agency, engagement, performance, and the innovative approach of learning differently. The conversation takes a deeper turn into understanding the context of 'no context', the issues with the 'just do it' mentality, and the art of tolerating discomfort. We examine the impact of false beliefs and how stress can surprisingly offer benefits. This leads to a discussion on the misconception of overnight success and the reality of success being decades in the making. The episode wraps up with an encouragement to give a bit more in everything we do, introducing our listeners to Alan Questel's insightful work. We highlight his website www.practicing-kindness.com and his book “Practice Intentional Acts of Kindness,” which provide valuable resources for those looking to delve deeper into these themes. This episode is a rich tapestry of ideas and insights, inviting listeners to reflect, move, and grow in kindness towards themselves and others. It's a must-listen for anyone seeking to understand the intricate relationship between our actions, our self-image, and the kindness we extend to the world. Thank you for listening, enjoy! Send us a text This was such a fascinating conversation. I had a chance to speak with the authors of the book "Necessary Death", Chris Gross and Preston Fassel. These guys take a truly unique approach to growth, resilience, healing and transformation. "Necessary Death" is a compelling and thought-provoking work. This book skillfully intertwines elements of psychological horror with deep philosophical inquiries. Set against a backdrop that blurs the lines between reality and the supernatural, "Necessary Death" explores the themes of mortality, fear, and the human psyche's resilience. The narrative follows a gripping journey that forces the characters, and consequently the readers, to confront the inevitabilities of life and death, posing profound questions about what it means to truly live and face one's deepest fears. With its rich character arcs and suspenseful plot, "Necessary Death" is a masterful contribution to the horror genre, offering a unique and introspective look at the existential dilemmas that haunt us all. In this thought-provoking episode, we delve into the depths of horror and self-discovery with Chris Gross and Preston Fassel, authors of "Necessary Death". Our conversation traverses the eerie and enlightening paths of horror films, exploring how they mirror our inner selves and aid in our mental health. We discuss the unique freedom of the horror genre, where the absence of limits allows for an exploration of boundless ideas. Drawing parallels to social cognitive theory, particularly Albert Bandura's work on overcoming phobias through vicarious experiences, we examine how horror films enable us to confront and process our fears safely. Our dialogue touches on the therapeutic aspect of horror, likening the genre to a journey of self-actualization. We explore how facing metaphorical monsters in films teaches us about resilience and overcoming life's challenges, reflecting on the hero’s journey and the confrontation with our shadow selves. The episode further delves into the concepts of grace and grit as presented by Ken Wilber, and how horror films often mirror this duality. We highlight the transformative power of horror, where the audience, initially drawn in by the monster, stays to witness the hero's journey, often finding parallels to their own life challenges. "Necessary Death" is discussed in the context of personal transformation and human coping skills, emphasizing how horror films can be a tool for self-discovery. We also explore the importance of mindfulness and balance between heart and mind, and the role of perception in shaping our understanding of horror narratives. The conversation shifts to the societal implications of the fusion of sex and violence in media, referencing the Joker as a commentary on mental wellness decline. We touch upon Charles Bukowski's profound insight into the pursuit of goals, and how horror sequels often demonstrate the impact of personal growth on others. Send us a text In this enlightening episode, we dive deep into the heart of authentic leadership with our guest, Chris Meroff. Chris wrote the book on authentic leadership. That's not a metaphor, his next book is literally titled "Discovering the Heart of Authentic Leadership." Chris is also a USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of his first book, Align: Four Simple Steps for Leaders to Create Employee Fulfillment . He wrote this book in 2019 to share with leaders the four simple steps that will transform the way you lead, renew your self-confidence and spark change. This led him to write his second book The Empathy Revolution: Practical Wisdom to Combat Organizational and Social Loneliness , where Chris shares his philosophy in a practical guide on why the current model of leadership isn’t working. He addresses that in order to retain employee talent and engagement, employees must grasp the vision and align with the values laid out from the top down. Chris Meroff is a founder, author and serial entrepreneur with a passion for helping business professionals find fulfillment in their work through sustainable success. We begin by exploring the true meaning of authenticity in leadership, understanding it as a relentless pursuit of truth and building relationships based on that truth. Chris shares insights on how to live by this truth, celebrating differences and worldviews without compromising values. We then tackle the often tricky balance between a company's verbal advocacy for truth and its actual practices. Chris offers his perspective on maintaining tenacious goal achievement while staying true to one's values, and the limitations of a single individual's worldview; especially if that individual is the leader. A significant part of our discussion focuses on defining oneself through a willingness to learn. We delve into common issues in workplace dynamics, such as the reasons behind disliking a boss, the breakdown of practices like diversity and respect, and the impact of bringing one’s authentic self to work. Chris then guides us through the concept of the visionary leader. He elaborates on the balance between delivering a visionary message and managing the uncertainty it can create, emphasizing the importance of ownership and the need to slow down for effective vision casting. The conversation takes a turn towards emotional intelligence with the 'empathy revolution'. Chris debunks myths about empathy and vulnerability, encouraging leaders to embrace these qualities. He emphasizes that our response to others is a reflection of how we show up, and changing our perception of others can transform our leadership style. Drawing inspiration from Joseph Campbell's iconic "hero's journey," we explore the profound challenges and ultimate triumphs one encounters when pursuing inner transformation. Just like I discovered the profound challenges of battling insomnia, while drawing meaningful insights out of the Star Wars series Ahsoka at 2:00am in the morning. Send us a text It's all my fault! That statement seems a bit harsh. It might even sounds a bit like blame and self-loathing; neither of which is productive, and can even be quite destructive in the long run. However, that's not what me and Tiff mean. In this episode, we are talking about responsibility, or the ability to respond to life's challenges, regardless of who or what is to blame. We believe that responsibility is critical to not only heal and rebuild, but finding emotional freedom. The question is, are we open to acknowledging, and owning the part we may have played in a particularly painful period of our lives? Again, not for the sake of blame, but for the sake of our own healing and personal growth. Many aspects of our lives can serve as a mirror; helping to put our perspectives, beliefs, and ideas under a microscope, creating the possibility for continual self-reinvention. We hope you enjoy this episode. If you don't, it's not our fault ;) Visit us at: www.theselfhelpantidote.com…
