In the opening episode of our new weekly segment, Ryan reads through and comments on an article that he wrote on Martin Luther King Jr. during the turmoil and civil unrest of 2020. The original article was entitled, "A Prophetic Word From MLK."
"If MLK were alive today, I think he would be greatly troubled by the state of both our thinking and our communication on a wide-scale societal level. MLK was trained by 'dialectical' philosophers and was a dialectical thinker. To put this in more accessible terms, he was a mediating thinker: he tried to find common ground between polarized viewpoints. He believed that truth was complex, not simple. He steered away from overly-simplistic, black and white, either/or thinking—seeking to find a synthesis out of sharp bifurcations.
