S02 E02: Meet the Founders, Pt. II
Manage episode 296119761 series 2858446
“I had absolutely no business bones in my body walking out of that program. And so it’s no wonder that I floundered and floundered until I pivoted to something else.”
— Daniel Lamb.
We have this idea that talent is all you need to make it as an artist — if you excel at your art, everything else will fall into place.
This definitely isn’t the case.
Artistic education doesn’t usually include practical knowledge like how much of a cut to pay an agent, how to save for taxes, how to broker deals with venues, or how to market yourself to get students… and not having these skills makes it a lot harder for artists to make a living doing what they love.
Talent is fantastic… but it’s not enough. Not even if you really, really, REALLY want to succeed. Unfortunately, that’s a lie that artists have been sold through films, books, and television.
The truth is, you need those skills, and a bit of strategy, too.
During this conversation, Anna and Daniel dive deep into Daniel’s early passion for music, his attempts to turn it into a career, the sense of disconnect that comes up when you work outside of your artistic field, and how to find (and accept) a creative middle ground that pays.
In this episode of the podcast, you’ll discover:
>> How Daniel was sucked into the vortex of music and the origin of his love for the guitar
>> Why artistic education is incomplete — and how the lack of practical, business guidance can harm young creatives
>> How Daniel made the shift from music to writing — and wound up building his own business and community.
