On this episode of The Hillsdale College Online Courses Podcast, Jeremiah and Juan discuss the deeply personal and precinct writings of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. In “ Marxism, Socialism, and Communism ,” professors of history, politics, and economics look at Marx’s life and writings, the misery and brutality in the Soviet Union, the atrocities of communist China, and the proliferation of Cultural Marxism in America. They explore how many ideas animating American politics today are rooted in Marxism, and yet how they differ from Marx’s thought. By taking Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and the Frankfurt School seriously, we can see the injustice and evil inherent in all strands of Marxism. We also better understand the critiques of communism made by Mises, Hayek, and Solzhenitsyn. We are, therefore, better equipped to defeat it. Solzhenitsyn captured the brutal degradation of the human spirit inherent in communism. Mises and Hayek demonstrated the flaws in its economic principles. On this special episode of Liberty and Learning, Mark Levin and Dr. Larry Arnn, President of Hillsdale College, embark on a compelling exploration of the political landscape in America. As they reflect on the significant shifts that have occurred under Donald Trump's administration, it becomes clear that this is a defining moment in American history. The episode begins with Levin and Arnn discussing the unprecedented changes in government bureaucracy. They highlight how the federal government has expanded its reach and influence over the years, moving from a mere 12% of the gross domestic product in 1930 to a staggering 51% today. This shift has led to the emergence of a comprehensive regime that regulates nearly every aspect of American life, raising concerns about the erosion of civil rights and the accountability of government to the people. One of the central themes of the discussion is the choice facing the American people: should they embrace constitutional governance or succumb to bureaucratic administrative control? Levin and Arnn argue that the current trajectory of the government is unsustainable and that a return to accountability is essential for the preservation of liberty. As the conversation unfolds, they delve into the concept of common sense and its role in effective governance. Drawing parallels between Trump's approach and the historical context of previous presidents, the hosts emphasize the importance of practical decision-making that takes into account the needs and desires of the American people. In conclusion, this episode serves as a thought-provoking examination of the challenges and opportunities facing America today. With a clear call to action, Levin and Arnn inspire listeners to engage in the political process and advocate for a government that is truly accountable to its citizens. Tune in to this enlightening discussion and join the conversation about liberty and learning in America. Liberty and Learning with Mark Levin and Larry Arnn is a 10-part series, hosted by veteran broadcaster and constitutional law expert, Mark Levin, and his good friend, Dr. Larry Arnn, President of Hillsdale College, dives deep into the founding principles of the U.S., as Americans face both crisis and opportunity. Levin and Arnn take listeners on a journey forward, as they unpack the country’s basic foundations and the self-government they require. Mark Levin and Dr. Arnn bring their knowledge and wisdom to bear in a candid conversation between lifelong friends on today’s latest news events. They will touch on the points of crisis in America, addressing each in light of our constitutional government, and tackling the pressing issues of our time to see how they fit into the grand tapestry of American history. The discussion will delve deep into the issues at the forefront of our nation’s concerns, like education, borders, citizenship, separation of powers, state and local government, and much more.
