Racism…
We’ve come a long way from the days of slavery and Apartheid - but the effects and the impact of race culture continue in 2020. Black women are at the bottom of the barrel and bare the biggest brunt in every sector of society, across the world. But the tide is slowly turning. Today’s book review is about doing just that. On navigating racism in the world as a black woman.

There’s a great phrase by Maya Angelou from her poem, To our Grandmothers. In it she says, “I come as one but I stand as 10 thousand.” I think it exemplifies the work of two black female authors who are helping women take up their space. Today I’m joined by Yomi Adegoke. She is an award-winning British journalist and the co-author of the 2018 Amazon best seller, Slay in Your Lane: The Black girl Bible.

I remember the first time I saw this book as I walked into an Exclusive Books... I was immediately drawn to the bold and pink colour that said ‘I’m unapologetically for you, Olwethu!’

I flipped over to the back and read the first line “Black Women today are well past making waves - we’re currently creating something of a tsunami.”

I didn’t need any further convincing that this would be the book I purchase for my girlfriends and the bad ass women in my life as gifts.

I chat to @yomi.adegoke (IG) on all things ‘Slay in your lane’ - the book spans conversations from education to dating to career and tons of inspiration and advise for us who, as @yomi.adegoke (IG) puts it, ‘are blockaded from all sides and there is little to no literature on offer to advise us as to how we’re supposed to push on’. 📚
