Why do so many of us get nervous when public speaking? Communication expert Lawrence Bernstein says the key to dealing with the pressure is as simple as having a casual chat. He introduces the "coffee shop test" as a way to help you overcome nerves, connect with your audience and deliver a message that truly resonates. After the talk, Modupe explains a similar approach in academia called the "Grandma test," and how public speaking can be as simple as a conversation with grandma. 1 Crystal Kovacs | Redefining Gravel Culture with the Rise of Dirt Squad Cycling | The Stable Cyclist Podcast 28:05
Mental Health Project : https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-stable-cyclist-maah-daah-hey-film-3/x/33398252#/ This week on The Stable Cyclist Podcast, JP sits down with Crystal Kovacs—founder and driving force behind Dirt Squad Cycling—for a heartfelt and honest conversation recorded live at the 2025 Unbound Expo. Crystal opens up about her personal journey into gravel cycling, the barriers she encountered, and the moment she realized that the sport needed more intentional pathways for people who don’t fit the "traditional" cyclist mold. We dive into how Dirt Squad was born not out of performance goals, but out of a deeper mission: building community and creating a radically inclusive space in gravel. Whether you're a longtime rider or just gravel-curious, Crystal’s philosophy of riding with heart—and riding together—is inspiring and energizing. If you love the soul and ethos of The Stable Cyclist, you’ll feel right at home with Dirt Squad. 1 Badlands Gravel Battle - Where One Conversation Changed My Life | The Bootleg Miles | Episode 7 9:36
Mental Health Project : https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-stable-cyclist-maah-daah-hey-film-3/x/33398252#/ Chase Wark Docu-Series : https://youtu.be/lxHdcdeQ7Bk?si=Rue4xkplPKh7psJQ In this episode, I return to the Badlands Gravel Battle—the race that unknowingly changed the trajectory of my life back in 2018. That year, I arrived unknowingly battling Bipolar Disorder, and yet I found myself in a rare stretch of natural stability. I was fit, focused, and I won. But what came after the finish line would shape everything: Nick and Lindsay Ybarra encouraged me to take on the Maah Daah Hey 100. That one conversation became the spark that carried me through a storm I didn’t yet know was coming. This vlog is about racing, yes—but it’s also about mental health, resilience, and the power of encouragement. As I race the 2025 edition of the Badlands Gravel Battle, I reflect on how that first race gave me a purpose when my life was falling apart. That memory became a lifeline through my diagnosis in 2020 and fueled the story I’m now telling through the film Back to the Start. Watch as I return to where it all began, chasing finish lines and healing in the North Dakota Badlands. Bobby opens up about his life before gravel as a passionate musician, and how that creative energy helped shape the welcoming, inclusive spirit of Mid-South. Together, the two discuss the emotional highs and crushing lows of putting on massive events, including the heartbreak and mental spiral following the wildfire-forced cancellation of Mid-South earlier this year. This is an intimate exchange between two high-energy, heart-forward people—offering a rare look behind the curtain of what it means to love, build, and carry a community through gravel cycling. We also dive into the mindset behind ultra-distance riding, what defines success, and what is the best gas station food. In this episode of Bootleg Miles, I walk you through the process of modding and customizing my new gravel race bike — and why dialing in a ride when you're 6'4" is no small feat. From chain waxing to bar swaps to internal brake routing, this was more than a quick tune-up. This pod isn’t just about building bikes — it’s about why the process matters. I share how wrenching helps my mental health, how I taught myself bike mechanics out of necessity, and how I finally brought White Lightning 2.0 to life. Pete Stetina is one of the most passionate figures in American cycling especially when it comes to the discipline of gravel. In this deeply personal episode of The Gravel Gospel, Pete opens up about the long road from WorldTour stardom to gravel salvation. We revisit his days riding with some of the biggest teams in the world, including helping Ryder Hesjedal win the 2012 Giro d’Italia and surviving a devastating leg injury while riding for BMC in 2015 at the Tour of the Basque Country. Pete takes us inside the physical and emotional toll of that crash, and how it nearly ended everything. But gravel saved him. As a rider with Trek, Pete cautiously dipped a toe into the world of off-road racing, only to find something deeper than podiums: purpose, community, and freedom. This is a rare look at the heart behind the racer, and a raw conversation with someone who redefined what a post-WorldTour career can look like. Whether you’re new to gravel or a longtime fan of Pete, this interview will change how you see one of the sport’s most unique voices. What happens when you show up to race... but miss the start because you're filming the race director for a documentary? That’s exactly what went down at Granny’s Gravel Grinder, a Central Minnesota gravel race hosted by Chase Wark and Wark's Cycling Services. With over 400 riders across multiple distances, the event brought big community energy, rowdy midwestern grit, and hospitality only Chase can deliver. For JP — back in the gravel game for the first time in two years — it meant lining up Dead F**ing Last (DFL)* after capturing pre-race footage for his upcoming docu-series on Chase. Despite the late start, the day turned into something far more meaningful. The post-race celebration held a surprise for JP: a brand-new Lauf Siegla and a sponsorship offer from Wark Cycling Services to support his storytelling work on The Stable Cyclist. This video captures the ride, the vibes, and how JP's work has shaped Chase's life over the past year. In this episode of The Bootleg Miles, I’m finally telling the full story of my love for the Bonk Bros. But this is more than just fanboy appreciation. This is a story about the kindness of strangers, unsolicited support and finding your way back after everything falls apart. In the midst of a massive mental health project in 2023, I had a devastating mountain bike crash and head injury sidelining me for over a year, I wasn’t sure if I’d ever ride again. But the guys in the Bonk Bros helped in the ways they could, and Adam Saban stuck with me. Now we’re working together to prepare for the Maah Daah Hey 100 and to finish that massive Mental Health Project—and this episode is a tribute to the people who never stopped believing. If you’ve ever struggled to get back up, or wondered if your story still matters, I hope this video reminds you that you are not alone. In this episode of Bootleg Miles, JP opens up about something far harder than finishing a grueling 100-mile mountain bike race: asking for help with his mental health. As a teacher, filmmaker, and endurance athlete living with Bipolar Disorder, JP reflects on the fears that held him back from getting help — and the life-changing shift that happened when he finally did. Filmed on the bike and from the heart, this ride dives deep into the raw, often unspoken challenges of living with mental illness. Whether you're struggling yourself or supporting someone who is, this episode tackles real mental health conversations head-on — including how coaching, therapy, and community can make all the difference. If you're navigating anxiety, depression, or Bipolar Disorder, this story might be the nudge you need to ask for help. And if you're just here for a ride, trust us — this one goes way deeper than watts. Kelly Jones is a two-time national champion in eSports and eMTB, but her path to the top was anything but typical. In this powerful episode, she shares her journey from growing up in England to moving to the U.S. at 15, and how a snowboarding accident changed the course of her life. For the first time, Kelly talks about how that injury led to a long struggle with addiction and abuse—but it was the bike that ultimately became her lifeline. After rehab, Kelly found a new identity and purpose through cycling. We talk about the highs and lows of recovery, the role of mental health, and how racing gave her a way forward. This conversation is a raw and inspiring look at transformation, resilience, and the power of sport to rebuild a life. Welcome to the first episode of The Bootleg Miles. Where we'll all come along on the journey this year as I look to finish the 3rd film in the Maah Daah Hey Film Series. This week, we'll start by looking back at the premiere tour for Maah Daah Hey: Together and the moment a room full of strangers became something much more. From Knoxville, TN to Fargo, ND, we sat down and shared stories—about bikes, yes—but also about friendship. And in a time when we seem divided on everything, that shared space meant everything. This series is brought to you by Wahoo. ( www.wahoofitness.com ) 🎬 *Back to the Start*, the next MDH film, begins production this summer. 🟡 Want to support the film? Running through the spring and the summer, The Stable Cyclist presents a new mini-series within The Stable Cyclist's feed: The Bootleg Miles. This new series will focus on JP and his stories as he prepares to film the 3rd film in the Maah Daah Hey Series, a mental health film about his own journey. This won't be a BTS style show though. JP will take you to races, you'll meet his coach and sometimes he'll really open up about his mental health. Wahoo Fitness ( www.https://www.wahoofitness.com/ ) has come on board to help sponsor this series and the work JP is doing! Episodes of the Bootleg Miles will typically drop on Mondays or Wednesdays and the first full episode will drop tomorrow. Also, DON'T WORRY! 1 James Huang | N-1, Honest Reviews, and the Wild Ride at CyclingTips | The Stable Cyclist Podcast 59:54
In this episode of The Stable Cyclist Podcast, I sit down with James Huang, one of the most respected voices in cycling tech. James now runs N-1, his Substack dedicated to honest, unbiased bike reviews, but his career has taken him through some of the biggest names in cycling media. We discuss his journey, the importance of integrity in product reviews, and how advertising dollars can sometimes muddy the waters of journalism. But the heart of this conversation is James’ time at CyclingTips, where he was part of a team that felt more like family—until Outside bought the company and tore it apart. James stayed until the bitter end, not out of loyalty to the new management, but to provide for his family. We talk about what it’s like when a job you once loved turns into something you can’t stand, and how to navigate the emotional and financial strain of staying in a toxic work environment. If you’ve ever felt stuck in a job you can’t leave, this episode will hit home. 1 Hannah and Kevin Simms | Insta Contest Winners to Cape Epic Contenders | The Stable Cyclist Podcast 50:16
Six weeks. That’s all the time Hannah Simms and her father, Kevin Simms, had to prepare for one of the toughest mountain bike stage races in the world—the Cape Epic. When Hannah unexpectedly won an entry through an Instagram contest, the father-daughter duo jumped at the chance to take on the grueling multi-day race in South Africa. Despite the short notice, they not only finished but placed 5th overall in the Mixed GC battle, proving that sometimes the best adventures are the ones you never planned. In this episode, we dive into the chaos of their last-minute entry, the highs and lows of racing Cape Epic as a team, and the unique experience of tackling an endurance event as a father-daughter duo. Hannah and Kevin share what it took to prepare, how they supported each other through brutal stages, and why this race became more than just a competition—it was an unforgettable bonding experience. Whether you're a fan of MTB racing, adventure stories, or just love seeing family push limits together, this is an episode you won’t want to miss! In this episode of The Stable Cyclist Podcast, I sit down with professional enduro and marathon XC racer Abigail Snyder, who I first met at the Maah Daah Hey: Together premiere in Roanoke. Abigail shares her journey in the sport and her work to lower the barriers of entry for women in mountain biking. But beyond her racing career, she opens up about a moment that made her unexpectedly go viral—a video of her having a panic attack mid-jump. Meant to show that even pros struggle, the video led to an onslaught of online attacks, mostly from men, forcing her to confront the darker side of vulnerability in the public eye. We dive deep into what it means to be open about struggles while navigating the toxicity that can come with it. Abigail shares how therapy helped her regain confidence on the bike and why creating space for mental health conversations in cycling is so important. This is a powerful and necessary discussion about resilience, online criticism, and the mental side of being an athlete. Whether you’re a cyclist, an advocate for women in sport, or someone who has faced public scrutiny, this episode is one you won’t want to miss. In this special collaborative episode between King of the Ride Podcast and The Stable Cyclist Podcast, I sit down with Ted King and Chase Wark to talk about their unforgettable weekend at MidSouth. Just as the event was about to kick off, devastating wildfires swept through Stillwater, OK, destroying homes and forcing the race’s cancellation. But instead of heading home, both Ted and Chase—without speaking to each other beforehand—felt compelled to do something bigger. They set out on the Mega-Mid-South route, a grueling 300-mile gravel loop, to raise awareness and funds for those affected by the fires. The cycling world followed along in real-time as Ted set off nearly an hour ahead of Chase, both attempting the Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the route. In a dramatic finish, Ted set the record before Chase arrived just minutes later, besting Ted’s time. Now, both riders are using their platforms to continue raising money for Stillwater and its surrounding communities. Tune in to hear their firsthand account of an extraordinary weekend, the power of the cycling community, and how we can all support those in need. If you are looking to give towards either rider's efforts, you can Venmo them below and let them know it's for Payne County United Way.
