×Mary L. Hamilton began writing for publication when her children were young. She sold articles to Christian magazines and later wrote a play for her church’s women’s ministry outreach. That play sparked her passion for fiction even as it humbled her to see it performed. She says, “I gave them words in black and white and they put skin and clothes on those words. They brought black and white to life in Technicolor.” By that time, her three children had quit taking naps and she couldn’t find a regular time to write when she wasn’t falling asleep. She gave up writing until her youngest was in school and then concentrated on writing fiction. Her first novels drew from her experience growing up at a Christian youth camp. The Rustic Knoll Bible Camp series for young teens tells the stories of three hurting teens who bring their “baggage” to camp and find that Jesus can lift their burdens. Since then Mary has written novels of mystery and suspense and plans to write more general stories for women. She has lived in Texas most of her adult life, and when she’s not writing, she enjoys knitting, playing with her dog, and a little phone photography. A little abput my guest on the Along Came A Writer show, Author Liz Tolsma... I’m blest to have the best job in the world – that of an author. I’ve penned several WWII novels, several prairie romance novellas, an Amish novel, and I’m working on my first romantic suspense. I’m a popular speaker on such wide-ranging topics as writing, courage, faith, preserving our family histories, adoption, and marriage. In addition, I work as a freelance editor. I’m married to my high school sweetheart, and we’ve settled next to a farm field in Wisconsin. The Lord blessed us with three children through international adoption. Our son, born in Vietnam, is grown and serves as a U.S. Marine. Our oldest daughter, born in Korea, is a college student majoring in international studies. Our youngest daughter, born in the Philippines, has multiple disabilities and is a source of much laughter and joy in our home. When I’m not in front of my computer, I enjoy walking my hyperactive Jack Russell terrier mix, reading, cooking, working in my large perennial garden, kayaking, camping, and traveling with my family. I am also a breast cancer survivor. It has been a journey of deep faith and trust in the Lord, but he has sustained me and granted me healing. The greatest love in my life is my Lord Jesus. I pray that my writing, as well as my entire life, will be to his honor and glory alone.…

It is summer, you are home with the kids, and you might just find yourself a little cranky! Help is on the way! Today, Becky and I are going to head into The Wynners Circle to talk about the mom you DON'T want to be! Join us! No matter how perfect a mom may look on the outside, every now and then she turns into the cranky mom that she never wanted to be. In her new book, The Cranky Mom Fix: Get a Happier, More Peaceful Home by Slaying the “Momster” in All of Us, popular author Becky Kopitzke shares how motherhood brought out more than cuddles, snuggles, and blissful times of play; it brought out the worst in her: the Momster! Unafraid to be authentic and share her own experiences, Kopitzke shows readers that life can be much more than living in the cranky zone. Moms will be relieved to learn from The Cranky Mom Fix that cranky mom doesn’t have to stay. The Cranky Mom Fix helps them slay the Momster for a happier, more peaceful home—and isn’t that what moms want most of all? Becky Kopitzke is the author of three books including The Cranky Mom Fix: Get a Happier, More Peaceful Home by Slaying the “Momster” in All of Us. As a writer, speaker, dreamer, believer, lunch packer, and recovering perfectionist, Becky is on a mission to encourage and equip women to be kind to themselves and others in Jesus' name. She and her husband Chad live in northeast Wisconsin with their two tween daughters, shelves full of slime supplies, and a puppy named Prophet. Beyond writing and family, Becky is actively involved at her regional evangelical church, where she leads women’s Bible studies, sings on the worship team, and hugs half the people she sees. On Friday's Wynner Circle I talk with author Amanda Barratt whose latest book My Dearest Dietrich is quickly becoming the novel most likely to be rushed to the top of your summer TBR stack! Join us to hear more about her behind-the-scenes, and what most surprised her about her characters in writing this epic novel. “When I first heard the name Maria von Wedemeyer, I wondered what kind of woman would capture the heart of such a brave and brilliant man as Dietrich Bonhoeffer. In writing My Dearest Dietrich, I set out to find their story. What I discovered went beyond all expectations. I discovered a man willing to give his life for the cause of truth who also wrote passionate letters of love and longing to his fiancée during months of imprisonment. I discovered a woman who lost the two men she loved most as a result of war but who took the risk of becoming engaged to a man shrouded by danger because of his actions against the Nazi regime. It's a deeply profound and relevant story that asks questions of us today. Questions about a Christian's response in the face of unspeakable evil, about courage, and the sustaining power of love,” Barratt said.…

I whine about being sick, make a few corrections for previous episodes and never get around to answering a question for just going on and on about not giving up. So, basically, this is a motivational episode. I think. Maybe. Right? Wash your hands after listening.
Topics in this episode: Dragon stuff Two sword fighting style
Questions on today's show: How do/did people carry weapons? What sounds do they make when wielded? (I say that you can hear the chamber turn in a pistol, but it's more correct to say revolver.) How can a woman overcome size and strength differential to beat a man? (I say judo is a reference for takedowns but it's more correct to say it's a good reference for throws.) Best underwear for battle!!!…

I love filet mignon. Seriously! My favorite type of meat. Maybe one of the reasons I like it so much is that I don't have it very often. If filet mignon were the only option of meat for me, though, I would likely get sick of it before too long. And someone who doesn't eat meat at all would never want to eat at my house at all. An option, any option no matter how good it is, only works for part of the population and only at certain times. (I'd hate to have filet mignon for breakfast! Or dessert!) So, in the publishing industry, there are more options. Through this program, you can better learn which one will work for you, depending on your goals and your type of project. Who knows, you might even find the perfect place for your book during this Publishing Laine hour.…

Hi! I’m Chautona Havig. (for those who care, that’s Shuh-TONE-uh HAVE-ig). Yeah. Just work with me here. I should have used a pseudonym, but when you grow up with a name like Chautona, it kind of sticks. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. ~ Hebrews 10: 23–25 Those aren’t just words on a page for me–they’re why I write. I write to encourage my brothers and sisters in Christ. The stories I create are to make people laugh, cry, question, consider. They’re for you. When the world screams for hope, I try to point you to the true Source of hope–Jesus. Sometimes life in the church no longer seems a refuge from the pain of a self-serving world around us, but through my stories, I try to point you to the only Refuge that can truly help–the Father’s Everlasting Arms. After the "false apex" and reflection of Part Four, the goals of your main characters need to be readdressed. They may even need some adjustment. Marji and Fay will work through this Fifth Part of the novel skeleton - the writing bones - using some popular movies as examples of these parts and their connected sections.…

Growing up in Houston, Texas in the 1970’s, historical romance author Annette O'Hare loved the stories about ghosts haunting the old Spaghetti Warehouse and the mysterious “blue light” cemetery. But it was "Devil's Island," the magical woods across from her childhood home where her imagination blossomed. She created fantastic scenarios to act out with her brother and the neighborhood kids where worlds were conquered and dragons were slain. Annette is still making up stories. She is the author of Northern Light and her new release, Redeeming Light. Her love for the history and heritage of her home state of Texas shines through in her writing and she's made it the backdrop for her book series. Annette is a longtime member of American Christian Fiction Writers and a beloved member of our chapter. Today we'll be talking about her writing journey and navigating down the rabbit hole of research for writing historical novels.…

Marji Laine Clubine and Fay Lamb discuss the parts of a novel. The "skeleton" that proves the foundation. Writers who plot and outline will love this discussion as we make sense of the novel structure. But authors who "write by the seat of their pants" can also benefit if they've ever strayed from the main point, written themselves into a hole, or found the pen or keyboard not moving! This skeleton can stir the thoughts, help you visualize your story once again and get back on the correct track.…

Marji Laine, multi-published author and Executive Director of Write Integrity Press, along with multi-published author and free-lance editor Fay Lamb discuss the bone structure of a novel. While this series is a natural for authors who plan out their stories ahead of time, the guide can also help pantsers who might find themselves stuck or diverted to a rabbit trail. This third episode in the series continues with what would be considered "Act II" of a novel and brings the sections of this part home with a comparison from popular movies. Following Marji's plan won't assure a Bestseller, but it will give your story a strong foundation on which to create.…

Most stories have an ebb and flow to them - the pacing. They are set up ahead of time to maximize readability and satisfaction for the reader. Movies have the same type of rhythm. Marji and Fay will begin a series of discussions on the skeleton of a story - the sections that will help an author organize their writing to capitalize on the expectations of the readers. This week, they will be discussing the opening of a story - how to do it right and why it's so important.…

The story is the thing! Right? Well, yes ... and no. A great joke isn't so great if the telling is spoiled or the timing of the punchline is off. The same is true of a great story. The premise can be golden, but if the writing utilizes old-fashioned practices, cliche' phrases or situations, or has poor grammar, an agent or editor will not likely choose to pursue the book and a reader will not likely continue past the first page. Writing is a changing occupation. What worked for the classics and the "modern" novels of the 70s and 80s simply doesn't work for today's genre novels. Tune in to learn keys to bringing your golden premise into the 21st-century publishing environment and learn what types of writing are plain indicators that a story, or the author, just isn't ready for a contract. Better yet, learn how to avoid those pitfalls so that your story rises to the top of the slushy waters of the pile!…

Trey Ganem has been designing unique, custom caskets for almost a quarter of a century in Edna, Texas. He's designed thousands of caskets since then, for adults and children, for sports stars, celebrities, and recently for victims of the tragedy in Sutherland Springs. He had just returned from delivering custom caskets to families of victims of the shootings in Las Vegas when this second tragedy occured. He immediately offered to donate free services and custom caskets to help the twenty-six bury their loved ones and help those families in the healing process. ABOUT: Trey Ganem, owner of Trey Ganem Designs, is adding life to the funeral world with his dream that started 24 years ago. While working as a hunting guide and providing taxidermy services out of the garage of his home in Victoria, Texas, Trey thought about his funeral. Not about who would be there or what they would say, but about what his casket would look like. He thought about that plain metal box and knew he wanted more. He imagined a casket customized to represent his life and thought about something 'outside the box'. He asked himself, "What could I do to really make my casket represent my life?" Today, his dream is coming alive. We take that plain metal box and let that person's "Soul Shine" through our custom casket designs. Trey Ganem Designs provides families with the opportunity to celebrate their loved ones life. Our work truly comes from the soul, which allows us to create something unique and personal for each individual and forever "Letting Souls Shine".
