On average, one woman a week in Australia is murdered by her current or former partner. 10 women a day are hospitalised for assault injuries perpetrated by a spouse or domestic partner. 1 in 3 women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15. These statistics have been pulled from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and tell a shocking truth about domestic violence within our society. Now you’re thinking, what’s this got to do with sport? Well, this episode’s guest is determined to be more than a statistic. Kim O’Riley is a survivor of domestic violence, an advocate for educating sporting clubs and empowering them to take a zero-tolerance approach when it comes to violence. In this episode we are joined by Mitch James, a former competitive swimmer who found a love for lifesaving, in particular inflatable rescue boat racing. Mitch and I swam at neighbouring clubs once upon a time; however our paths didn’t cross until this year, now that we are working together at Life Saving Victoria. In this chat, Mitch takes us through his swimming journey, and how that lead him to the world of lifesaving. We chat about the how competitive pool swimming can help you when out in the ocean rescuing someone, and the link between tumble turns and waves, if you’re puzzled don’t worry, Mitch gives the best description. Mitch really shows how being involved in the sport of lifesaving can be beneficial for the community, with over 50 lifesaving clubs made up of more than 37,000 members, working together to prevent aquatic related death and injury in all Victorian communities, which I think is pretty special. Bec and I know each other as we grew up swimming for the same swim club, where Bec specialised in the open water events. She then added triathlon to the mix as well as race walking. Debuting at her first Olympics last year in the 20km racewalk. In this episode we delve into the benefits of training for multiple sports as well as an insight into some of the nutrition and training studies that go on behind the scenes with high performance athletes. I had the absolute pleasure of being joined by this weeks guest, Australian swimmer, Sally Hunter. I had a bit of a fan girl moment when Sal agreed to come onto the podcast, as I grew up watching her achieve so many things during the decade she represented Australia in the pool, including competing at two Olympics, two Commonwealth games, and multiple world championships. But Sally’s journey in swimming hasn’t stopped there, after retiring in 2016 she has been coaching as well as mentoring and advocating for young athletes in the world of sport. Before getting into the interview, I wanted to mention that after recording Sal and I had a chat about how to navigate getting back in the pool after retiring but not being able to face it. The advice she gave me was to get rid of any expectations, not count laps or time yourself – which as a competitive swimmer these things are all pretty much second nature. But a few days later, guess who found themselves back in the pool and getting out with a smile on their face looking forward to the next time. Jack Gerrard an Australian Swimmer who has not only represented his country in two world championships – but did so whilst studying medicine, and can now call himself a doctor! Jack is incredibly humble and proves to everyone out there, that you can do amazing things both in and out of the sporting arena. In this episode Jack takes us through his early years in the sport and what got him hooked on swimming and the wonderful work he did as Club Captain of his swimming club. It was actually a Swimming Victoria developing young leaders day where Jack and I met, back in 2014 and it’s been amazing to watch his achievements both in and out of the pool. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably been glued to the TV watching the Olympics. I know growing up it was always such an exciting time getting to see all the incredible athletes show what they have got on a world stage. These athletes become hero’s to children, they are the reason that they start a sport or continue with a sport. I’m coming to you with a little taster of an episode I recorded with Olympic long jumper Brooke Stratton last year. This was an early episode of the podcast, and I really had no clue of setting up the audio – not that much has changed, but please excuse the sound quality. I love the fact that Brookey was inspired by watching the Sydney 2000 Olympics and is now about to step onto the world stage for her second Olympics at Tokyo. It really shows what a bit of talent, dedication and hard work can do towards achieving your childhood dreams. I think it’s important to acknowledge that it’s not always smooth sailing for athletes to get where they are, there’s a lot of hard work and obstacles along the way, with Brookey being no exception of this. Welcome to part two of my chat with Carol Cooke, in last weeks episode Carol took us through her early years of being a 7 year old with a dream to 40 years later achieving it. The 24 hour mega swim is an event I first discovered in 2012, and loved the concept so much that at the age of 16 I started a team and forced 14 of my friends to swim in a relay for 24 hours straight, raising money for MS. Carol takes us through the early days of starting the 24 hour mega swim and some stories of how the money raised has actually changed people’s lives. I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Janice Crosswhite – a passionate advocate for community and women’s involvement in sport. Janice started her sporting journey off as a participant in many sports and then went on to physical education teaching. Janice has always been passionate about improving access to sports and was awarded the order of Australia medal (OAM) in 2001 for her efforts. Because of Janice’s vast knowledge and experiences, this conversation will be split into two parts, with part two released in a few days. In this episode Janice take’s us through her early years of participating in sport, and how she fell in love with Basketball. The studies she completed as well as meeting her husband, who was an Olympic basketballer himself and the experience of going to the Olympics as a supporter. We also hear about the project that lead to Janice being awarded an Order of Australia medal and the benefit participating in sport throughout her whole life has provided her. Janice and I know each other as she is a Labrador breeder – and we got both our beautiful boys Harry and Dozer from her – so you may hear a reference or two about that. We are joined today by the marvellous Nigel Knighton. A 5th Dan in Karate, sports teacher and father. Nige takes us on his sporting journey of how he found a passion in the sport industry and made a career of it. This is quite a close to home episode for me as I knew Nige as Mr Knighton, during my 6 years of high school. Nige started off as my year 7 sport teacher – when a very non athletic Fiona used to forget her sport uniform or spend an hour running away from the ball. I was lucky enough to be a part of a year 9 self defence class, again taught by Mr Knighton where I started to discover that sport wasn’t just about the mainstream football and netball. Mix that with finding my gills in the pool, as Nige describes my swimming. I decided to do my certificate 4 in Sport and Recreation as part of year 11 and 12, lead by Mr Knighton. It was not only my favourite subject during those final years, but the one I put the most time into and thus did the best at. When I look back now, if it wasn’t for Nige’s welcoming and engaging attitude towards sport, I may have been one of those kids who lost interest and dropped out of this wonderful world I’m now involved in. A national level competitor in athletics in the heptathlon, but Bree wanted more out of herself, she wanted to represent her country. So at the age of 28, with some Australian Institute of Sport testing, Bree transitioned to track cycling. During her time sprinting Bree went to the 2014 Commonwealth Games and won a bronze medal. Bree is a 4 time Australian Champion on the track and has lately been making her mark on the road. In this podcast we chat with athletes, coaches, and industry professionals at all levels of sport, about the benefits being involved in sport has provided them outside of the just the performance side of things. I’m your host Fiona, I have a background in competitive swimming, being both a coach and a swimmer. I’ve been involved in the fitness and aquatic industry for 10 years and I’m currently managing a swim school based in Victoria, Australia. I started this podcast whilst we were under a strict 5km lockdown in Melbourne because of COVID, however I’ve always wanted to delve deeper into the physical, social and mental benefits being involved in sport has provided people. This curiosity started whilst being a competitive swimmer, but just grew stronger when I was completing my Bachelor of Sport Development. So with a little extra time on my hands a spark of inspiration hit and thus this podcast was born. Welcome to the last episode of season 1. This week's guest is professional Australian Triathlete Levi Maxwell. Throughout the few years I’ve been watching Triathlons – I’ve always admired Levi, so it's an absolute honour to be joined by him for a chat. In this episode we discuss Levi’s introduction to the sport as an adult and how he transitioned from a beginner who had to teach himself how to swim to taking out the Age group Ironman world championships two years running. And then making his mark in the professional arena. Levi also shares some of the injuries and mental challenges that he’s faced as part of his journey in the sport. This episode is open and raw, and does discuss panic attacks, so if this something triggering to you please skip ahead. Today’s guest is my incredible fiancé Todd Buschkuehl. Todd’s participation in sport started at a young age as he followed his big brothers footsteps into motocross. He later found a love and passion for cricket but in his own words…lacked the ability to do well at it. Eventually making his way to endurance sports such as Triathlon and Road Cycling. Todd’s achievement in both sports are not just reflective of his performance, but the lessons he has learnt in overcoming the injuries and obstacles. Todd touches on some of his sporting highlights as well as some of the challenges that have come up along the way. Without turning this into a love story, you could say the reason Todd and I initially bonded was because of our love, passion and dedication towards our sport. Something that a lot of our guests are touching on is the social benefits of participating in a sport, and I couldn’t preach it enough how beneficial it truly is. We recorded this episode 6 days after Todd’s 12 hour ride to raise money for Brain Injury Australia, so we discuss why Todd chose do this, the eventful lead up and what was going through his head in the later stages of his ride. Today we are joined by Australian basketballer Callan Brookes. Callan plays for the Goanna’s, who is the national deaf basketball team for Australia. Playing basketball at a local level in regional Victoria, Callan who was unaware of the pathways just wanted more and lead him to search the internet where he found the Goannas in his early 20’s. For more information about the Goanna’s or deaf basketball Australia you can find links in the show notes. In 2015, Callans first year in the team, they won a gold medal at the Asia Pacific Deaf Games. Through playing with the Goannas Callen has not only discovered that he is capable of anything he can set his mind toward, but he has also found a family in the team. Having to fund their training camps and competition expenses themselves is an additional pressure that the Goanna’s face. Today’s episode is with Emily McKie. Emily and I met during our uni studies and bonded over our passion for our sport, and I’ve always felt inspired by her ability to chase her dreams. Emily created and managed what is now one of the biggest female junior football leagues in Victoria - the Eastern Region Girls Football League. But she didn’t stop there… she then went on to coach the National Women’s AFL team in Germany. Emily is still coaching a high-performance women’s team, and is a VET Sport and Rec teacher, passionate about creating generational change.
