I have not heard from many people that their life is very easy going and smooth, especially from people who give priority to God in their life. There are moments when a frustrated person prefers death to living any more, finds hard even to smile in front of others, wants the life to end somehow, wants to isolate from others, and feels terrible in many ways. Outwardly everyone seems OK and happy, but in their private life they may be facing mountains of problems. If we feel that we cannot bear the mental pain any more, understand that God is able to give us courage and strength if we call upon Him. I have experienced that. Soon after the birth of Jesus in a manger in Bethlehem, an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before some shepherd boys who were watching over their sheep at night. The glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terribly frightened. The angel announced the good news of the birth of Jesus. Suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God. In the Bible we notice that there are several occasions when the heaven and earth seem close to each other. When God took the Israelites out of Egypt, He travelled with them in the Arc of the Covenant and spoke to them through Moses. God handed the Ten Commandments to Moses from Mount Sinai. The heavenly beings communicate with the human beings on the earth and give necessary help. Usually God sends angels to help the humans on the earth or to give them some important messages. Sometimes God Himself communicates with the humans. God spoke to all the prophets and assigned them to deliver important messages to the humans. I know personally several people who have received encounter with Jesus or direct help from angels in times of trouble and prayer. I myself received a two hours encounter with Jesus in the year of 1995. God loves us so much that He sends His angels to guard, guide and protect us through various stages of our life. In the Roman Catholic church there are three saints with the name Valentine. All the three saints were stoned and beheaded for their Christian faith during the time of different Roman emperors. St. Valentine, officially known as Saint Valentine of Rome, is a third-century Roman saint whose memory is celebrated on February 14. Valentine day has its roots in paganism. Lupercalia was a pagan fertility festival celebrated in February, and it had ties to a Roman god. In an effort to clean up the pagan holiday, in 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius designated February 14th as Valentine’s official feast day. The new holiday quickly spread to all countries that practiced Christianity. Historically it has commemorated romantic love, but recently it has been expanded to include all types of love. During the time of Emperor Claudius II, marriage was prohibited for soldiers. As a priest, Valentine conducted the marriages of couples who were in love. For this reason Valentine was sent to jail. Valentine used this time in jail to reach out to people with the love given by Jesus. The jailer, Asterius, became friendly with Valentine. He was impressed with Valentine’s wisdom that he asked Valentine to help his daughter, Julia, with her lessons when she visited the jail. Julia was blind, and the jailer tested his faith by asking him to restore her blind daughter’s eye sight. Placing his hands onto her eyes, Valentine restored Julia’s vision. The jailer accepted Christianity along with 44 members of his family. The now faithful jailer then freed all of his Christian inmates. Emperor Claudius sentenced Valentine to death for not giving up his faith. Before he was killed, Valentine wrote a last note to encourage Julia to stay close to Jesus and to thank her for being his friend. He signed the note, “From your Valentine.” Valentine was beaten, stoned and beheaded on February 14, 270. St. Valentine sacrificed his life for his faith in Jesus, not for his love for us. Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews who believed that Jesus came from God and that everything Jesus did was with the power of God. But he was afraid to accept Jesus publicly for fear of the Jews. That is why he came to see Jesus at night. It is sure that when he came to Jesus, he had not received baptism or become born again. This is the end of the year 2024 and the new year is going to begin in a few days. This is the time to settle with God for whatever way we have lived our life so far and whatever amendments to be made in our life in order to start a new life with God in the way He desires about us. The first coming of Jesus was for the redemption of the humanity from their original sin caused by the sin of Adam and Eve. The Halloween ritual has a pagan origin. It dates back more than 2,000 years to Ireland. An ancient Celtic fire festival called Samhain was celebrated usually from 31st October to 1st November at the end of summer. It was focused on fire as winter approached and to bring light into the darkness. People knew that there would be lots of deaths of animals and humans during the harsh winter months. Ezekiel 18:20 –“The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son’s iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself; and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself.” Exodus 20:5,6 & Deuteronomy 5: 9,10 – God says about idol worship: You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, visiting the iniquity of the father on the children, on the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing loving kindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.” Please note that the 1st part is in English, and the 2nd part is in Malayalam starting at 14:36 mark. These verses seem like contradictory, but when we go deep into it and try to understand it, the meaning will be clear. People have the tendency to blame every problem on some sort of generational curse. This is not biblical. According to the Old Testament Law, God visited iniquities on future generations for the specific sin of idolatry. When Israel turned from idols to serve the Living God, the curse was broken and God blessed them. When a person sins against God, God will double check on three to four generations to make sure if anyone repeats that sin. If that sin is repeated, they will be punished. The four generations will not be aware of the sins of the forefathers. That is why every person should repent about own sins, pray for forgiving the ancestors, follow the commandments of God and lead a clean life always.
