In this series we touch upon what their Hungarian connection has been throughout their lives so far, how they have stayed connected with their Hungarian heritage, and for this episode you will hear about how my guest has just recently taken the leap to make a deeper connection to his previously untapped Hungarian Heritage. In this third episode of the series, you will hear from Glen Tickle, and he has a healthy fraction of Hungarian heritage, but as you will hear in the episode, he spent most of his life with little connection or information about his Hungarian ancestry. Recently, though, that has all changed for Glen Tickle, and you will hear all about Glen’s language learning experience, his quest for Hungarian citizenship, as well as, how he weaves being Hungarian into his comedy act. As many of you know, Anna has been my guest on an episode when we discussed her role as co-editor of the Hungarian Roots and American Dreams book, and she has also co-hosted episodes with me as we Celebrated Hungarian Heritage Together when we interviewed contributing authors and their stories that were included in Hungarian Roots and American Dreams . She is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Institute of English and American Studies at the University of Szeged in Hungary, and on today’s episode, she will discuss her research as a Fulbright Scholar that she recently completed at the University of West Virginia where she studied the linguistic heritage of American Hungarians in Appalachia. We discuss how Americans use and speak the Hungarian language outside of Hungary, how we establish our social relationships through language, and what factors affect language integration. Not only that, but we also talk about Anna’s cemetery visits and the interviews she conducted with Hungarian decedents in the Appalachian region. On this Season 2 Finale Episode of the Hungarian Heritage Podcast, I again have the pleasure of speaking with Ilka Kocsis, the author of Ilka’s Kitchen. Like bookends to this season, Ilka was my first guest of Season 2, and now she is back on the podcast for the finale episode of Season 2 to talk about her experience as a winner and participant of the Balassi Summer University Scholarship Program in Budapest during the summer of 2023, which is organized by the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The most difficult part of this episode was narrowing down all of the information to just 50 facts, as there is so much history and so many statistics related to this world famous puzzle cube. On this episode of the Hungarian Heritage podcast, I will be speaking with Elizabeth Lukacs Chesla, and she is the author of Y ou Cannot Forbid the Flower, a novel about the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. What’s unique about this novel is how Elizabeth was able to skillfully weave together stories, poems, and historical documents, along with the first hand experiences that her father shared with her about being a freedom fighter during this tumultuous and revolutionary time. As you will hear in the episode, Liz has placed her father in the novel as the main character who serves as the “everyman” or “every Hungarian man”. Welcome to this episode of the Hungarian Heritage podcast. This episode is the first in a series of three episodes about the stories, legends, folklore and history behind many of the commonly visited tourist sites in Budapest and throughout Hungary. My guest for this series will be Eniko Almadi. Throughout her life, Eni has always been passionate about Hungarian history, folklore, and legends and you will see that she possess a great wealth of knowledge which we will be using to discuss and maybe discover new things we didn’t know about the many places around Budapest and in Hungary. Eni, is also a University student in Hungary studying history, where she will one day be able to connect her lifelong personal passion with her history degree to work in Museums or as an historical researcher. For this three part series, Eni will help us dive a little deeper into why and how some of these famous places in Budapest and in Hungary actually came to be, as well as, some of the interesting stories that happened in these places. In this last interview episode of season one, our sweet 16 episode, I have the privilege of speaking with Anna De Cheke Qualls, who is not only behind the communication and social media of the Tisza Ensemble, who you may recognize as a previous guest of the podcast, but Anna also brings her professional expertise to the conversation, as she is a leader in the field of communications. We talk specifically about the big Hungarian Community, or the diaspora outside of Hungary. We discuss how important it is for Hungarian communities, organizations, businesses, and even people to maintain strong consistent communication with, not only their social media presence, but with each other, in efforts to maintain relevance and provide support for existing communities and people, as well as the ability to welcome and support the new and potentially interested people who are looking to connect to their Hungarian heritage.
