Saturday, August 9 -- When we hear the words Southern Christian Leadership, do we think about an 1960's struggle for civil rights or a 21st Century approach to human rights? Depending on your perspective, any effort to promote equitable participation starts with making equality work where we live, learn, work and worship. Last week, we looked in on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a possible space for developing economic security programs. This week, it’s back to Birmingham where the issue of “Toxic People, Families and Environments” impact outcome of a timeless question, “Where do we go from here?” According to the President's My Brother's Keeper Task Force, roughly two-thirds of Black and one-third of Hispanic children live with only one parent. Moreover, research suggests that a father's absence increases the risk of his Black child dropping out of school by 75 percent. And even in the 21st Century information age, too many Americans still live in poverty.
