Veterans In Politics- Season 5, Episode 1 with Sir Jeffrey Donaldson MP
We meet Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and Member of Parliament for Lagan Valley since 1997. As of 2022, he is Northern Ireland's longest-serving MP.
He served in the Ulster Defence Regiment during the Troubles and was also the campaign manager for the UUP MP Enoch Powell's successful re-election campaigns in 1983 and 1986. This is something our host Jonny asks about in this episode as well as the Good Friday Agreement during the Northern Ireland peace process.
We also talk about the murder of his cousin Samuel Donaldson, an RUC constable. He was the first policeman to be blown up by the IRA in the 'Troubles'.
