Welcome to another edition of the Scenic View podcast, hosted by Jonathan Owens alongside Ardis Watkins, Suzanne Beasley, and Sam Cline. This week we discuss the attack on a correctional officer at Bertie Correctional and the staffing issues that must be addressed in the coming legislative session.
An inmate at Bertie Correctional murdered Sgt. Meggan Callahan in the first of five correctional officer deaths in 2017, and sadly the issues from almost eight years ago persist. Bertie is one of several North Carolina prisons experiencing extreme understaffing in the ongoing vacancy crisis plaguing state government.
We also talked about the House's vote to overturn Gov. Cooper's veto of a bill that included more hurricane money and provisions to strip powers from the governor and attorney general.
