Danielle started the episode by mentioning Heidi Rome, who has an autistic son and provides loving support to other mothers in her position. Elizabeth then gave a Max update, the kitten who kept scratching all the fur off of his face and neck. Elizabeth spent months looking for a cure or at least medication to manage his condition, and thank goodness she finally found a solution for poor little Max. He has a full face and neck of fur now and is raising havoc around the house.
One thing that helped Elizabeth through the tough times was remembering the message that Heidi gives to all moms going through difficult conditions with their children (because our cats are second only to our children!) It's the title of her book, "You Just Have to Love Me: Mothering Instructions From My Autistic Child".
The conversation revolved around how parents think they're not good enough for their kids (or cats) but there's no such thing as the perfect parent and you can't control everything, even if you want to! The similarities between cats and autistic kids, especially with respect to communication, were discussed. And of course everyone told a variety of funny, poignant, as well as weird stories about their fur babies.
