Earlier this month the United Nations presented a report to the Security Council that implicated Iran in an attack on Saudi oil facilities in 2019. Iran has denied the allegations. On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for an extension of an arms embargo imposed on Iran which was set to be lifted this October. The timeline for the lifting of the embargo is based on the Iran Nuclear deal which the US has notably pulled out of.

Saudi Arabia and European allies support the extension of the arms embargo while other Security Council member states including China and Russia oppose it.
