Do You Understand That the Gospel Is About Authority? Not off to the side, or one of the overlooked aspects of it, but front and center, in your face, written in flaming letters and spoken with a tongue of fire: THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST IS ABOUT AUTHORITY! Do you understand it? In this episode, we look at the ways scripture establishes Jesus Christ’s authority over all things and how this authority is expressed through the gospel. We discuss Christ’s role as lawgiver, and how his authority and the understanding of it that necessarily comes with salvation, changes the entire worldview of the sinner who is saved by His grace. We also discuss how God the Father’s and Christ’s authority are demonstrated through the relationships that each has with those they have saved, both individually, and collectively, and we spend some time talking about the ways in which a father and a husband use their authority differently from a judge focused on the condemnation of the law. Understanding the nature of authority in the gospel matters for so many reasons. For one, the defining aspect of the sinner is his hatred of authority. It is the cruel irony of his situation, that he, a slave to sin, would fight so hard to pretend that he is his own master, even as he labors in accordance with his enslaved will toward his own death and destruction. He is truly without hope, unless by grace, his eyes are opened by the work of the Spirit, he is given a new heart, and his understanding of the authority of Jesus Christ changes everything.
