A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO!

Good Morning! It’s a Friday, and here we are moving nicely into and through the month of October! October 8th to be exact...So...what do we have to look forward to today? Well, today just happens to be National Fluffernutter Day!! That’s right! National Fluffernutter Day!! And when I first learned it was National Fluffernutter Day, can you imagine the FIRST question that came to my mind? WHAT IS A FLUFFERNUTTER??! Now, you may KNOW! But I didn’t. So, I’m having to look it up. Fluffernutter...fluffernutter...fluffernutter... Oh, here it is! Fluffernutter. A fluffernutter is a sandwich made with peanut butter and marshmallow creme usually served on white bread. Well, okay then! How fun is that?! National fluffernutter day!

Oh, and, by-the-way, today is ALSO National Hero Day! Yeah, it really is! And, you know, hear a lot about heroes these days, and we talk a lot about HEROES here on TCN Mornings. But what exactly IS a HERO? Well, simply put, a HERO is someone who HELPS others. Sometimes in really BIG ways, and by doing so, they might become FAMOUS Heroes. But even in small ways, heroes HELP others. SO...today, we have a story about a girl named Lauren who just happens to meet a real hero. It’s called Lauren Meets a Real Hero, and it starts right now.

***Lauren Meets a Real Hero

Lauren was a new student at Cayman Elementary School, and she was having a hard time making friends. One day, Lauren was the last person to get on the bus, and while there were several seats left, there were none for her. As she walked the aisle, she would ask if a seat were taken, and a girl on the seat would slide over toward the aisle, and say, “Yes, this seat is taken.” Lauren tried four more seats, all with the same results!

Finally, when she was only three rows from the absolute back of the bus, a boy moved over, not toward the aisle but toward the window. He said, “Come on, you can sit here.” Lauren couldn’t believe it—a boy named Carlos—the most popular guy in the school.

She said, “Thanks, but aren’t you afraid you’ll lose friends by letting me sit by you?” He said, “I like having friends as much as anybody else, but if having friends means I have to treat people like they treated you, well, I guess I can do without them!”

He went on to say, “I think my sister is in the same grade as you are. Here’s her number. Why don’t you give her a call? You guys would get along great.”

“Are you sure?” asked Lauren. “Absolutely!” said Carlos. “Look,” he said, “we don’t get into playing all those mind games that the air-heads do.

Well, Lauren did call his sister, and eventually, they became good friends, but that particular day, Lauren saw clearly the difference between those girls who hurt her, and Carlos who was quite the HERO!

That's what I know about the Beginning of THIS Hero, and I know that YOU can become a Hero TOO!

****

Every hero starts as a child, and every child can choose to become a hero.

So, have you ever been a new student at a school where everyone already knew each other?

What was that like for you? And ...when a new kid comes to your school or class, do you try to be a friend to him or her? If so, how do you go about doing this? Also, do you ever worry about making some of your old friends angry with you when you try to make a new friend? Are they right to be angry? And finally, in what two ways was Carlos being a HERO to Lauren? Just some thinking points for this Friday Morning.

Okay....Just ahead, another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... Also, the Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future...right here on this Friday edition of TCN Mornings.

*****

Well, here he is! My Old Irish Pappy! Oh, but this is Friday, so first let’s review what he taught us Monday through Thursday... shall we?

MONDAY

Don’t be one of those people who’s always saying, “That’ll never work!” Doubt, disbelief, and discouragement become a bad habit—a real waste of time and energy. Try instead to make it work, or at least figure out how the same goal could be accomplished in another, more effective way. Learn to be an encourager to yourself and to others.

TUESDAY

Don’t be a complainer! If you truly have a complaint, take it to the person who can actually do something about it. Don’t just gripe to your friends (or anybody else who will listen to you).

And, certainly, don’t go posting it on social media. When you do that, it’s just a bunch of gossip. And nothing good ever comes from gossiping!

WEDNESDAY

You’ll never know what you can do until you try. So many times, we convince ourselves that we just simply can’t do something...whatever that something happens to be, when the reality of the matter is that we’ll never know what we can or cannot do...until we try!

THURSDAY

ALWAYS spend less than you earn. And always SAVE part of what you earn! No exceptions!

Okay, and NOW, here are some words of wisdom for FRIDAY from my Old Irish Pappy.

My Old Irish Pappy...

Dream transition.

Pappy quote...

How simple is that?! Always leave a place in as good or BETTER condition than you found it! When you enter a room or an area, make sure it is in the exact same condition when you leave as it was when you arrived. And, if you can, make it even a little better! Pick up behind yourself. If you use something (and make certain you have permission from the owner of that something to use it, right?) Be sure it is in the same or better condition it was before you used it. Again, ALWAYS clean up behind yourself.

Stinger.

Okay, Now... It's time for the QUESTION OF THE DAY! Wait...I don’t have a question for today. Where’s the question for today? Mhmm. You mean we don’t HAVE a question for today?! We ALWAYS have a question. What’s up with that? Hmmmm. Well... tap, tap, tap. I guess it is what it is...

Okay...moving right along, Yesterday, Ethan from Pineville, Louisiana was the first to send in the correct answer to the Question: Where does coffee come from, and how is it processed to be ready to brew?

He said coffee comes from coffee beans which grow on a coffee plant. It’s a bush-like plant which can get very tall, but they are usually kept trimmed to around 5ft to keep them manageable. On these coffee plants, there are bunches of blossoms called cherries that grow, and it's inside each of these cherries that you can find two coffee beans. After the beans are collected, they are roasted and ground up so you can make coffee with the fresh coffee grounds. And Ethan, that’s pretty much it! So, thank you for that answer. And I might add that coffee plants are grown mostly in tropical areas around the world. When the coffee beans are harvested, they are shipped all over the world for people to enjoy. So, there ya go!

Well, here’s hoping you have a GREAT weekend!! Stick around...one more quick segment ahead, but as for me, Jim Lord...I...will see YOU...first thing next week for the MONDAY edition of TCN Mornings right here on The Character Network!

Abbey's deeper thinker.

Reflection:

Closer.

Dear Parents,

After years of development, trial, and revision, we are so excited to now share with you the most effective version yet of our Proactive Bully Prevention Program that has proven to "change the culture" at hundreds of campuses across America in profound ways. Research has shown the TCN Method™ to be the single most effective school based Violence and Bully Prevention Intervention of its entire genre. We have hundreds of testimonials from educators describing the results they have gotten, and you can view many of these at www.TheCharacterNetwork.org/Testimonials

This program, The Beginning of a Famous Herois used in conjunction with a companion program called Bully Alert!in schools played over the intercom during morning announcements twice or more each school week, and backed up by a common culture which reinforces the principles taught, at every turn, and incorporates the phrases of the academic language during any teachable moment.

These two sets of stories work together to convey a common academic language which says, “A bully is a person who hurts others on purpose (even if it’s just hurting their feelings) but a HERO is a person who HELPS others. So CHOOSE to be a HERO by HELPING instead of a bully by hurting.”

They also promote the concept of POSITIVE PERSONAL VISION, helping each student to realistically visualize his or her own "Future Self," and in doing so help relate consequences of actions and attitudes today (good or bad) to that future self.

It is the spaced repetition of these principles that makes the program effective. It is the 100% turn-key presentation that makes it easy!

This program takes VIRTUALLY NO TIME (only 4 minutes a week!) away from classroom instruction. But it also provides a common language across the entire campus when teachable moments occur!

The TCN Method has been extraordinarily successful in the past, in almost a thousand schools all across America, from California to New York, with a special concentration all over Texas, where The Character Network is based, and has been used to the benefit of well over a million students across the past two decades.

Then Covid struck, with the majority of schools ceasing in classroom instruction altogether for the majority of the previous school year, and after years of successful growth, we found ourselves in the very difficult situation of having to rebuild almost from scratch. So we started a morning podcast to help make the principles and teachings of TCN available to kids to have at home… but we need help from parents like you to get the word out, and also to help us gather financial support to once again make the method available again to not just the schools we lost due to Covid, but to every school and every child who could benefit and needs this going forward.

We invite you to become a coworker with us on our mission. Please start by visiting us at www.Patreon.com/theCharacterNetwork and considering becoming a sponsor for this work, and then dropping us a line at info@thecharacternetwork.org so we can learn more about you. Thank you so much!
