Welcome to the SL Podcast. My name is Kathryn Aragon, and I'm your host. The Solopreneur Life can be a lonely, sometimes scary endeavor because you wear all the hats. Today, we're talking about the decision you're likely going to have to make at some point in your journey. Someone's going to offer you a job, and you're going to have to decide whether you're willing to lay everything down and build someone else's empire. Because ultimately, that's the distinction, right? Build your business. Build someone else's business. Building your business, you're the CEO. You make all the calls, do work you love, take projects you care about—but you also carry all the risk. Building someone else's business, you're an employee. You work on the projects they give you, with people you may or may not get along with—but you get a steady paycheck, benefits, and a team of people who share responsibility for the success or failure of what you do. There are pros and cons to both. The question is: Is it a failure to lay down your own business to build someone else's business? Let's dive in:…

Welcome to the Solopreneur Life Podcast. I’m your host, Kathryn Aragon. Learn what it takes to build and scale your own business, so you can enjoy the freedom and flexibility that comes with the Solopreneur Life. Today, we’re talking about Clients vs Bosses: How to Position Yourself for Success. When I was in a job interview, I told the interviewer, I’m not a monkey, just doing what I’m told to do. I’m a strategist. I can get you results, but you have to give me my head. That didn’t lead to a good working relationship, over time. Because in a job, your employer wants you to be an employee. When I talk to potential clients, it’s another story. They tell me, “I don’t want to have to tell you what to do. You tell me.” When you start your solopreneur business, your number-one challenge is getting clients. (Where do you get these elusive things called clients?) You finally get one, and you slip back into old habits, thinking you work FOR, not WITH your clients. You take orders, do the work, and hope they like it. That’s not actually why you get hired. Your clients want an expert. They want someone who can come in and tell them what to do. They want this worry or burden lifted off their shoulders. They want a partner. Rules to remember: 1 - You set the tone. If you act like an employee, you’ll get treated like one. 2 - Figure out your process then work it till you have a solution for your client. Your clients hire you because they have a problem. You have a solution. Think about that. You’re a problem solver, not an order taker. You’re a leader, not a follower. Own it. Is that hard for you? What’s holding you back from letting go of an employee mindset.…
