Episode 19: Tips on Employee Time-Off Requests, Part One of Two

It’s that time again! The birds are chirping, the ocean waves are crashing, the sun is shining, and students are graduating. And do you know what that means?

It’s time for a discussion about time-off requests!

Welcome back, listeners! Thanks for joining us for another episode of Leaving the Nest. I’m your host, Kathleen Pellegrino from ROCS Grad Staffing. Our mission is to help you find a job out of college and thrive in the real world.

Today, we’re going to be chatting about time-off requests. I figured this was a perfect time of the year to have this episode come out because summer is upon us, we just got through Memorial Day, and a lot of people were requesting off for that weekend.

And as the weather gets warmer, a lot of people are going to want to start going on vacation at the beach rather than working in an office.

We’re going to break this conversation into a few different parts. We’ll primarily be talking about what to take time off for, how to request it, general best practices, and more!

If you’re in your first year at a new job, this episode is for you. Be sure to share this episode with others you know who are just starting out in their careers also—you might be able to coordinate your time-off requests together!

Enjoy!

In This Episode:

[1:06] – Kathleen introduces the topic for today’s episode: time-off requests.

[2:20] – The biggest thing to take away from today’s conversation.

[4:30] – How does someone get vacation time?

[5:42] – This is when you should not be taking time off when you first start a job, according to Kathleen.

[6:52] – We hear the process of informing companies about the desire to take time off.

[8:57] – Planned time off during a job search.

[11:22] – Are pre-planned trips a deal breaker during the interview process?

[13:30] – We live in a world where people can work remotely while on vacation. But is that acceptable?

[15:10] – These are the times when it’s not acceptable to ask for time off, in Kathleen’s opinion.

[18:09] – Kathleen reminds us that we don’t want to live with regrets.

[21:02] – Kathleen wraps up the conversation and lets us know how we can contact her if we have questions.
