For him/her, yes.
But even more for you, the manager.
After all, what do you really know about this person?
Not much I can guess.
So why waste this valuable time in the beginning?

Not relying on hearsay or stories from others.
Though those are useful too.
But from your interactions with him/her.
You just need to set things up right.
