In Rev 4-5, the Lion who is the Lamb who was slain was found worthy to open the scroll containing God's eternal plan of redemption, judgment, and the consummation of all things. Now, in Rev 6, by His authority, the Lamb opens the scroll and enacts its contents. The first four seals represent a unit of judgment upon the earth due to mankind's sin against God--judgment carried out between the two advents of Christ. With each of the first four seals a different horseman is sent out representing different expressions of God's judgment against sin. The four horsemen have been riding since Christ's ascension and will be riding until His return, punishing sinners and perfecting saints, and pointing to a final judgment to come. Revelation 6:1-8 "The Lamb Sends the Four Horsemen" I. What do the Horsemen Represent? A. Why Horses? B. Why Four Horses? C. What are the Horsemen? II. When do the Horsemen Ride? A. Compare Views. B. Compare Scripture. III. Why are the Horsemen Relevant?

×Revelation 12 is the center and key of the whole book, as it shows the characters and story behind the scenes of it, and behind the whole bible and human history. Revelation 12:1-6 focuses on introducing the characters as it expands on Genesis 3:15's pronouncement of the enmity between the seed of the serpent and the Seed of the woman. - Revelation 12:1-6 – The Woman, the Dragon, the Child, and the Wilderness. Seed of Woman vs. seed of Serpent: Why Things are the Way They Are. I. The Woman with Child (vv1-2) II. The Furious Red Dragon (vv3-4) III. The Child who Rules from His Throne (v5) IV. The Woman who Flees to Her Place in the Wilderness (v6)…
We have said, in previous sermons, that the purpose of the Jordan River crossing is to reveal the resurrected, ascended, and exalted King Jesus who will not fail to defeat all His and our enemies and He will bring us into the rest that He has promised and secured for us. This should give the believer great confidence for today in his Christian life and, also, for the hope of future glory The goal of this sermon is to walk through Joshua 4:11-24 to summarize the previous studies on "the crossing" and to give special exhortations and encouragements for us. - I. Our Union With Christ (v11) II. Our Union With Christ's Body (vv12-13) III. Christ Our King (v14) IV. Christ Our Priest (vv15-19) V. Christ Our Prophet (vv20-24)…
Joshua 4:1-10 - The Proof of the Crossing - Again we see the rich symbolism, the signs that point to Christ, His work, His Word, and His Church--things of which the Old Testamant prophets inquired and searched carfully (1 Peter 1:10). - I. Twelve Men (vv1-4) II. Two Piles of Stone (vv5-9) III. One Memorial (v10)…
After 1 John 3:1-3's call for the believer to "look" to Jesus and His coming, 1 John 3:4-9 called the Christian to "don't look back" to the life of sin without Christ, in order to look and walk forward in Christ and the new life in Him. Now with 1 John 3:10-18 there is the call for the Christian to be "who you are" as a child of God in His kingdom, reflecting and representing his new nature, family, kingdom, and God in his conduct to love God and to love God's people with the love of Christ. And the children of God will be markedly different from and be opposed by the children of the devil. - 1 John 3:10-18 - "Who Are You?" I. Two Kingdoms (v10) ---A. Two Children ---B. Two Fathers ---C. Two Loves II. The Manifestation of the Kingdom of Satan (vv12-13, 14b-15, 17) ---A. The Example, Cain (v12) ------1. His Father ------2. His Brother ------3. His Deed ------4. His Motive ---B. The Motive of the World (v13) ---C. The Child of Satan's Condition (v14b) ---D. The Internal Realities of the Child of Satan (v15) ---E. The External Results of the Child of Satan (v17) III. The Manifesto of the Kingdom of God (vv11, 13-14, 16, 18) ---A. The Message (v11) ---B. The Experience (v13) ---C. The Hope (v14) ---D. Example of Christ (v16) ---E. Internal Realities of Child of God (v16) ---F. External Result of Child of God (v18)…
The Pilgrims' journey through the Songs of Ascents comes to an end with Psalms 133-134. And it fittingly concludes with exhortation for the Pilgrims to dwell together in unity and worship--with the emphasis on "dwelling together." Our Christian pilgrimage is to be a pilgrimage 'together' in unity in Christ's church and for His glory. - Ps 133 – Dwelling in Unity I. Exposition (vv1-3) ---A. Unity (v1) ---B. Oil (v2) ---C. Water (v3) II. Application (1-6) from James Montgomery Boice ---A. Unity is a Gift from God ---B. Unity is for the Small and Great alike ---C. Unity's Blessing flows from One to Another ---D. Unity is a Foretaste of Heaven ---E. Unity can be Found in the Church ---F. Unity will be Perfected in Heaven - Ps 134 – Blessing of Worship I. Blessing from House (v1) II. Blessing with Hands (v2) III. Blessing from Heaven (v3)…
The Songs of Ascents are discipleship songs that were sung by Jewish pilgrims on the trip up to Jerusalem for one of the three annual feasts. So it makes sense that some of the Songs would relate to seeking and trusting the Lord in the daily family life. Psalms 127 and 128 are a pair of the Songs that do indeed teach concerning the family. - Psalms 127 and 128 are a pair. Ps 127 warned of that it was 'vain' (the key word!) to live a life and "build a house" outside of fearing God and walking in His ways. Ps 128 then espouses the 'blessed' (the key word!) life of the one who fears God and walks in His ways. Ps 127 uses the blessing of children as an example of the need to trust God in "building." Ps 128 uses the blessing of the the whole family as an example of the blessing of a god-fearing life. - Psalm 128 reminds us that the simple day-to-day activities and responsibilities are transformed into the greatest blessings of our earthly life, when redeemed by and lived for Christ. - And Psalm 128 gives one of the best and most beautiful picture of the biblical roles of husband and wife and the biblical family. - I. Blessing of Fearing God (v1)—this is foundation! ---A. Blessed -B. Fear the Lord II. Blessing in Work (v2) ---A. Garden -B. Head of Home III. Blessing in Marriage (v3a) ---A. Fruitful Vine -B. Heart of Home IV. Blessing in Children (v3b) ---A. Olive Plants -B. Around Table V. Blessing in Church (vv4-6) ---A. Nation? -B. Church!…
- Since Psalm 126 ended with a call for diligence to work for the Lord while trusting in His sovereignty to bring the results as He sees fit (and promises), it is fitting that Psalm 127's main them is trusting in God and His goodness and sovereignty while living for Him. Solomon--as he teaches in Ecclesiastes--cautions us that if we live and trust in our own skills, labors, and motives all our building and watching will be vanity. But if the Lord builds the house--we labor for Him according to His priorities and will and by His power--there will be blessing and success. - And a wonderful example of this is the blessing and parenting of children. Children are a gift from God, not earned, not able to be built, to be enjoyed and raised up for God and by God's directions and helps. And we trust God for the results. - Introduction ---A. Focus ---B. Familes ---C. Foundation ---D. Phil Johnson I. Trust in the Lord (vv1-2) [Seek Him first...] ---A. Workman (v1a) ---B. Watchman (v1b) ---C. Worrier (v2) II. Gifts from the Lord (vv3-5) [...and these shall be added to you] ---A. Gift from the Lord (v3) ---B. Arrow for the Lord (v4) ---C. Blessing from the Lord (v5)…
Like the cycle of the Seven Seals, the cycle of the Seven Trumpets ends with the Return and Judgment and Reign of Christ: "And He shall reign forever and ever!" With the Seventh Trumpet we see the return of Christ, the resurrection of the dead, the final judgment, and Christ establishing the Kingdom of God to reign for ever. The Seventh Trumpet: Rev 11:14-19 [Outline and helps from Richard Phillips] I. The Kingdom of God Declared (vv14-15) II. The Kingdom of God Celebrated (vv16-18) III. The Kingdom of God Consummated (v19)…
With the foundation divinely laid by God with sinful men's vain plotting as a means, Jesus rises from the dead, conquering death, hell, Satan, and wicked men's schemes. Matthew uniquely uses the Roman soldiers in his recording of Jesus' resurrection to emphasize the un-deniability and truth of the greatest even in human history. - The words spoken to the women at the tomb are especially encouraging to us as disciples today. - I. The Guards Posted (at the tomb) (Matt 27:62-66) II. The Guards Prostrated (before the tomb) (Matt 28:1-10) ---A. Angel & Soldiers (vv1-4) ---B. Angel & Women (vv5-8) ---C. Lord & Women (vv9-10) ------1. Seeing Christ (v9) & 2. Sent by Christ (v10) III. The Guards Paid Off (Matt 28:11-15)…
The Burial of Jesus is more than just a bridge between His death and His resurrection. It is interesting that Scripture often makes a big deal of the burial—why is that? Why speak of death, burial, and resurrection instead of just death and resurrection? This sermon helps us to see the significance--and necessity--of Jesus' burial. I. Servants at the Burial (Matt 27:55-61) ---A. The Servants (1.Women 2.Secret Disciples) ---B. The Services (1.Took down 2.Wrapped 3.Laid 4.Rolled 5.Witnessed) II. Schemers at the Burial (Matt 27:62-66) ---A. The Schemers (1.Pilate 2.Chief Priest & Pharisees) ---B. The Scheme (1.Take guard 2.Seal stone 3. Make secure 4.Made secure) III. Matthew 27:26-38 - "Christ Scourged, Delivered, and Crucified" - I. Scourged (vv27-31) [Suffering as Substitute for us and Symbolism of the what Cross represents] ---A. Stripped (vv27-28a) ---B. 00:00 Sermon 55:53 Testimony 1:01:30 Baptism The interlude between 6th and 7th Trumpets (Rev 10-11) is meant to encourage the Church that though they will have tribulation in this life, the are overcomers in the Overcomer. With Rev 11:1-14, the second half of this interlude, we see the Church represented as One Temple and then Two Witnesses. She is measured and owned and secured by God at His Temple but She will face tribulation and persecution as His Witness in this present evil age (awaiting the age to come when the She will be in her final and perfected state). This sermon focuses on the Two Witnesses in Rev 11 as the Church, sealed yet sent out into a world opposed to her, empowered by the Spirit, the Gospel, and Prayer during the 42 months/3.5 years/1260 days between Christ's first and second coming, and looking to the completion of her faith at the return of Christ and the resurrection. This sermon presents the necessity, power, and practice of missions (church-planting domestically and abroad) from Romans 10:14-17. Jesus commissions His local churches to send out preachers and Jesus Himself speaks through those they send. I. The Necessity of Missions (Rom 10:14-15) II. The Power of Missions (Rom 10:15-17) III. After 1 John 3:1-3's call for the believer to "look" to Jesus and His coming, now, with 1 John 3:4-9, the Christian is told to "don't look back" to the life of sin without Christ, in order to look and walk forward in Christ and the new life in Him. This sermon covers the text to answer the three questions of... 1. What is Sin? 2. What has been done about Sin? 3. What are we to do about Sin?…
