The Dungeon Master's Guide is one of those core books that many often debate about how "core" it really is. The truth is that you really do not need this tome to run the game when it comes down to it. However, to simply ignore it would be to deprive yourself of a great resource for the game. Each edition had it's own version of the DMG (some editions had more than one DMG!), and each one varies in how useful it really is. This core book began life in AD&D 1e after it was discovered how much advice was usually needed to help DMs all over with running their games. This tome has been a staple the game (and other games) ever since. Tune in to hear which versions of the DMG I have felt are the best over the past 5 decades of D&D (Please note: I have not yet done a thorough enough review of the 2024 DMG to include it in this episode yet - that book will get it's own episode in the near future).

Oh this week's episode, I wanted to look into what house rules people are using these days. House rules are a long and glorious tradition for tabletop roleplaying games. Ever since the hobby began with the original D&D release in 1974, house rules have been baked in and expected at almost every table. It had been a while since I last looked up what house rules people were pushing, and in this day and age, as we are all connected via the internet, I fully expected a deluge of house rules and likely bickering about it. I was not disappointed! In fact I found such a large amount of house rule chatter that I decided to make this volume 1 of potentially many more Ritual of Scrying episodes. Welcome to the Pining For Pixels podcast! This is my video game variety show podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a subject or theme that interests me, and I will speak about what is on my mind in the world of video games! I was pretty excited to do this episode and finally play the first Klonoa game after all the wonderful things I had heard about it. After playing it now, I can say in some ways it was worthy of the hype, but in other ways it kinda fell short. That said, it was certainly a nice brisk experience, and one that I think suited the book club series of episodes well! This series has a pretty dedicated base of fans, and a lot of it is driven by the nostalgia of playing this one when younger. I can completely see why this would leave such a lasting impression on someone, and even for me today, having experienced the game without having it spoiled, it still left an impression despite my lack of nostalgia for it. Welcome to the Pining For Pixels podcast! This is my video game variety show podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. It's time for another entry in the top 100 as we slowly but surely count down the top 100 video games of all time. Star Fox was a game that you might find difficult to get into, but it was partially a case of "you had to be there". In the time that Star Fox was released, we had never seen anything that advanced looking on the SNES, nor any console before. Seeing was believing though, and the game, in true Nintendo fashion, was a well designed and tight playing rail shooter filled with personality and good replay value. So although today it isn't visually impressive, the gameplay is still as good as ever and worth your time, regardless of your experience with the franchise. Just as good was the next title in this franchise, Star Fox 64, but it all started with the SNES original. Tune in to hear what makes this game (and 64) rise up so high, and marvel why Nintendo has not been able to replicate this franchise's success since those 2 games. Welcome to the Saving Throes podcast! This is my Tabletop role-playing game podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. The final core rulebook in the revised 204/2025 D&D 5e lineup is now out at local game stores and soon to be everywhere. I picked up my copy recently and have had some time to look through it, compare it against what has come before, and particularly against what we had with its 2014 counterpart. I've got some good news.... but I also have some bad news. Much like the PHB and DMG before it, there are some missed opportunities in my opinion, but still, there is enough to like here as well that it might make you scratch your head a bit. If you have the original 5e 2014 core rulebooks, don't throw those out just yet! However, don't completely write these ones off either, particularly the new Monster Manual. This one is looking at the dual cart for Metal Dragon & Life on Mars, which in my opinion are the perfect match together! Both of these games saw life as modern day retro releases on the Sega Genesis (seperately), getting a proper cartridge for the original hardware and everything. Now these 2 titles have been combined together for this newest Evercade release, and it is a match made in heaven. I was able to put them both through their paces. If you are a fan of the good ol' 16 bit days, and especially if you were a Sega kid growing up, you owe it to yourself to get this cart and play these 2 amazing games. I recently discovered this wonderful book after watching a recent episode of the YouTube "ACKS to Grind" podcast from Alexander Macris. Author John N McGowan was the featured guest and they discussed the topic of this book, and I was really impressed by the insights and discussion they had. I felt like they understood the kind of game that really appeals to me, so I immediately ordered a copy of his book "The Living Campaign" from Amazon (and it is a really nice price). After having had some time with it, I came to realize that this is a great resource for GMs all over who play in this style or want to know about this style. In fact, it is a great read for anyone with even a passing interest in this old school style, that is still alive and kicking today thanks to the OSR. Welcome to the Pining For Pixels podcast! This is my video game variety show podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. This week I am taking a look at the rules modifications for the revised 2024/2025 version of 5e, from one of my favourite TTRPG creators and creator of Runehammer Games, Hankerin Ferinale (check out his website and shop at www.runehammer.online). He just posted a bunch of excellent tweaks you can apply to your game to spice things up considerably. These address some of my issues with the revised 5e rules, and suggest some brilliant workarounds. Some of these things made me do a double take, so when you read his article or listen to this episode, make sure to take a moment to truly consider what is being suggested. I think overall these mods create some really new and interesting play dynamics! With that said, I'm not on board with everything presented here. Welcome to the Pining For Pixels podcast! This is my video game variety show podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. It is finally time to put pen to paper and finalize what my overall favourite game of the year was for 2024. I was honestly surprised by how hard this was, especially after coming off of a particularly eventful 2023, I hadn't realized just how many good games we got in 2024 in comparison. Nonetheless, there can only be one at the top! In this case, I have 10 nominees, any of which could have just as easily been my number one pick, but like I said, there can be only one at the top. Although I went back and forth a lot, I always knew what the overall number one was going to be.
