In the next episode of Postcode Prejudice, I had the absolute pleasure of chatting to Priya Prakash, a former resident of Macquarie Fields in New South Wales. Situated 38 kilometres south-west of Sydney's CBD, Macquarie Fields is a suburb a part of the City of Campbelltown Local Government Area. The suburb was named by early landholder James Meehan in honour of Lachlan Macquarie, who was Governor of New South Wales at the time.
Macquarie Fields' most notable resident is former Socceroo Brett Emerton who started his footballing journey at local football club Gunners FC. Emerton represented the Socceroos 95 times and had overseas stints playing professionally for Blackburn Rovers in the English Premier League and Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Priya spoke openly about her time living in Macquarie Fields and how it shaped her into the person she is today. She vividly remembered her first encounters of postcode prejudice once she finished high school and started her tertiary studies at the University of Western Sydney. A melting pot of all cultures in Sydney's Golden West.
Priya is a proud Mac Fields product who didn't let the outside noise determine how successful she could be. If anything, it built a resiliency to help her thrive as an adult!
A postcode doesn't define who you are. Why should a four-digit number determine our position in the social hierarchical pyramid?
