Acomi and Turk182 explore the art and short lived career of Canadian comic book artist Gene Day. A close friend and apprentice (of sorts) of artist Dave Sim, Gene did work for small press comics while trying to land a job at Marvel.
He was eventually hired as the inker artist for the martial arts comic The Hands of Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu, and later became the series artist with issue #100. His clean and detailed art, along with impressive layouts and design, caught readers attention and sales increased.
But, supposedly, not everyone liked Gene's panel layout and visual narrative. It's said, that editor Jim Shooter wasn't a fan of Gene's long, sequential action panels. A work incident involving a weekend trip to New York, big infested hotel, sleeping on the bullpen sofa, and lack of heat lead to his untimely death.
