Mississippi is a land of storytellers. How we get our stories has changed over the years. It used to be the word we heard while on the front porch. Then it became a newspaper thrown in the driveway. Then radio and television became the center of our worlds. In the late 1990s and early 2000s the internet changed how we got our information. Then in 2007, the iPhone put all that information in the palm of our hands... The world hasn’t been the same since. When people they think of the media, many different things come to mind. But at the end of the day, our democracy depends on an informed public. Even the founding fathers realized the importance of a free press. Thomas Jefferson said it boldly when he proclaimed, “Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost.”

My next two guests will help us explore the changing world of how we get our stories, Margaret Sullivan, author of “Newsroom Confidential,” former media columnist for The Washington Post and the first woman, fifth public editor of The New York Times will join us to talk about the role news plays in a changing journalism landscape and Dr. Andrea Hickerson, Dean of Journalism at Ole Miss, will share her research on Deep Fakes and how journalism schools are training journalists of the future.

Marshall Ramsey, a nationally recognized, Emmy award winning editorial cartoonist, shares his cartoons and travels the state as Mississippi Today’s Editor-At-Large. He’s also host of a "Now You're Talking" on MPB Think Radio and "Conversations" on MPB TV, and is the author of several books. Marshall is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and a 2019 recipient of the University of Tennessee Alumni Professional Achievement Award.
