As critical as The Holy Spirit is to our relationship with God, the apostle Paul saw the need to emphasize the importance of unity. While it may seem odd at first, experience tells us that humans can tend towards pride, independence, and a myopic view of the world. Paul expertly uses the analogy of our physical bodies to explain how God intended us to use these special gifts He gives us.
This illustration fits perfectly across many levels and situations. For those struggling with pride and independence, it humbles us. For those struggling with insignificance, it empowers and encourages us. The truth is that God does have unique gifts for each of us, but we are not independent of each other and certainly not independent from Jesus.
