Für die einen ist ʿUmar-e Ḫayyām ein Prophet der Hedonisten, Agnostiker und Atheistinnen, für andere ein strammer Vertreter einer vermeintlich authentischen persischen intellektuellen Tradition, und wieder andere sehen in ihm einen Autor tiefreligiöser mystischer Poesie. Seine Vierzeiler, die sogenannten Rubāʿīyāt, sind sowohl in Europa und den USA als auch dem persischsprachigen Raum bekannt. Von Wein ist die Rede, von der Vergänglichkeit des Lebens, von Schicksalsergebenheit aber auch vom Gebrauch des eignen Verstandes in einer Welt, die uns letztlich unerklärlich bleibt.
Was es mit Umar-e Ḫayyām und seinen Gedichten auf sich hat, darüber sprechen wir heute mit Herrn Ulrich Rudolph. Herr Rudolph ist Professor Emeritus der Islamwissenschaften an der Universität Zürich und war schon einige Male bei uns zu Gast.

For some, ʿUmar-e Ḫayyām is a prophet of hedonists, agnostics and atheists, for others a staunch representative of a supposedly authentic Persian intellectual tradition, and still others see him as an author of deeply religious mystical poetry. His quatrains, the so-called Rubāʿīyāt, are known in Europe and the USA as well as in the Persian-speaking world. There is talk of wine, of the transience of life, of surrendering to fate, but also of using one's own intellect in a world that ultimately remains inexplicable to us.
Today we talk to Mr. Ulrich Rudolph about what ʿUmar-e Ḫayyām and his poems are all about. Mr. Rudolph is Professor Emeritus of Islamic Studies at the University of Zurich and has been our guest several times.
