Welcome to our third episode of The Lovely Book of the Day podcast! I’m your host Carrie, from the Lovely Living blog and Lovely Living University online classes website. I have another nice book suggestion for you today.
It’s a rainy autumn Saturday here in Seattle. I’m looking forward to doing some extra reading today. I’ve made a big pot of tea (blackcurrant is what I was in the mood for today) and sent my boyfriend off on a long walk with our puppy.
We’re heading into the holiday season, with parties, entertaining, gatherings and celebrations centered around food. Many of us are spending more time in our kitchens, making homemade food, baking and trying new dishes. Some of us might be taking cooking classes now that fall’s slower pace makes a bit of room in our busy lives.
Back in the early 2000s, food blogging was really taking off. A food blogger named Julie Powell decided to attempt cooking each recipe out of Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” over the next year, while blogging about her successes and failures. She gave herself 365 days to cook all 524 recipes in her tiny apartment in Queens in NYC. She also shared info on her personal life, marital struggles, and wrote with lots of humor. She also wrote with lots of cuss words - I wanted to warn you in case you don’t like reading those.
Her blog became the basis of a movie starring Meryl Streep as Julia Child and Amy Adams as Julie Powell - it came out in 2009 and is quite enjoyable.
The chapters are organized in days and recipes, such as “Day 40, Recipe 49 - To Make an Omelette” and “Day 30, Recipe 201 - They Shoot Lobsters, Don’t They?”
One learns a lot about Julia Child and her cooking in this approachable and interesting book of successes and failures in the kitchen. I feel like there are a lot of Instagram “cooking my way through this cookbook” accounts due to the influence of this early food blogging book.
