The Detroit Tigers fell to the Kansas City Royals in a heartbreaker at Comerica Park. Despite leading 2-0 for the majority of the game, the Tigers saw their efforts erased when the Royals' MJ Melendez launched a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning. Alex Faedo started on the mound for Detroit, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings before the bullpen took over, with solid performances from Brant Hurter and Will Vest. Matt Vierling drove in one of Detroit's runs with a sacrifice fly, while Gio Urshela added an RBI single. Colt Keith continued to shine at the plate, going 2-for-5. However, the Tigers couldn't hold off the late rally from Kansas City. Shelby Miller, who was tasked with closing, unfortunately, surrendered the fateful home run, leaving the Tigers just short of the win.

Jim Leyland was honored by the Detroit Tigers in a pregame ceremony retiring longtime manager Jim Leyland’s #10 jersey. Jim Leyland won 700 games as a manager for the Detroit Tigers from 2006 to 2013 and led the team to two World Series appearances in 2006 and 2012. Jim Leyland was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame earlier this year as a member of the 2024 class.
