Ep. 95: Awake or Asleep: The Allegory of the Cave
Manage episode 312911418 series 2860877
Philosophy opens up so many potentials in our life. It gets us to think critically about what we are hearing and determine our own interpretation of the concept. In this episode, we dive into one of the most poignant philosophical stories of the past 2000 years, The Allegory of the Cave by Plato.
This story tells how someone who had been among a group of people imprisoned in a cave for their whole lives had escaped, and his experience on the outside world for the first time was like a major awakening of his consciousness. But when he returned, the people inside the cave were frightened of the tale- as all they had ever known was the security of the cave.
This is an analogy about how some people are too scared to wake up to the truths of their world. They will even fight to defend the limitation they live in.
