Episode Description: Jessica B. Harris may have been born and raised in New York City, but she has Tennessee roots through her father and has spent much of her life split between homes in the Northeast and the South – specifically New Orleans. For more than fifty years, she has been a college professor, a writer, and a lecturer, and her many books have earned her a reputation as an authority on food of the African Diaspora, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the James Beard Foundation. A few years back, Netflix adapted her book, High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America , into a 4 part docuseries. And I’m very proud to say that she’s a longtime contributor to Southern Living with a regular column called The Welcome Table. This episode was recorded in the Southern Living Birmingham studios, and Sid and Jessica talked about her mother’s signature mac and cheese, the cast-iron skillet she’d be sure to save if ever her house were on fire, and her dear friend, the late New Orleans chef Leah Chase. The James Bond franchise is known for pioneering the cold opening for a film which is more commonly used in television shows. Whether bungee jumping off a dam, being shot and seemingly killed in bed or skiing off a cliff with a timed release of the Union Jack parachute, the 007 films have found many ways to start with a bang. In the first of our Ranking series, the Bond Daft lads gather together to discuss their favourite pre-titles sequences with the aim to collectively agree on a winner and two runner's up. Enjoy!

The Kapeesh crew are back! (Well, some of them). That's right, we are back for our new film reviews project. You guessed it (or you read the title)- we are tackling the Batman franchise. And, to do it correctly, we started with the very first Batman serial film released in cinemas during the Second World War. So, that brings some interesting discussion about how Batman was used as a propaganda piece for the Americans against the Japanese, in amongst our thoughts on how it's dated from a cinematic perspective. Join us as we delve into the performances of the very first big screen version of the Caped Crusader, the writing, music, action scenes and a barmy plot which involves ray guns and zombies. Enjoy!…

In this final podcast of 2022, the crew reconvene to discuss recent film viewings of the month of October (yes, edited over four months late). In the (now not so new) films section, Scott hunts down and slashes the Halloween franchise with particular focus on Halloween Ends, Gordon and Steve B share their thoughts on the provocative Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, and Steve also discusses The Sound of 007 on Amazon Prime. In the TV section, we delve deep into the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon, Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 finale, Man Vs Bee, Doctor Who Season 13, Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and the BBC documentary Russia 1985-1999: Trauma Zone. And, if that wasn't enough, our Look Back section covers the rest of the Halloween series, The Final Destination, What We Do In The Shadows, The Italian Job, Orange County and Muriel's Wedding. And we end with the sad news of Robbie Coltrane's passing - with a brief tribute to the great Scottish actor. That all said, enjoy!…

In this Deja-Revu episode, the Kapeesh crew are stuck in a time paradox which somehow involves discussing the (proper) James Cameron film debut in spoilerific detail - for eternity. So, if you have a few endless life cycles on you, give it a listen as we discuss the merits of one of cinema's classics. We go into our feelings on Schwarzenegger's star-making turn as the titular baddie, Linda Hamilton's brilliant performance as the soldier-in-making Sarah Connor and, of course, Michael Biehn's intense portrayal of Kyle Reese. We also delve into plot, writing, Brad Fidel's inconic score and a whole load on the very logistics of the time travel storyline. Not to mention where it may have dated (ahem, stop-motion effects). It's one not to be missed. Unless of course you are currently being targeted for termination. In that case, good luck! For everyone else, enjoy!…

In this stupendously epic podcast, we reconvene to discuss our film and TV viewings from the month of September 2022 (yes, slight delay in editing). We cover Idris Elba's latest Beast, Taika Waititi's much derided Thor: Love and Thunder and we try to remember details from Liam Neeson's assassin thriller Memory. In the TV section, we delve deep into the latest Star Wars series Andor, the Lord of the Rings prequel series The Rings of Power, Game of Thrones' prequel series House of the Dragon, Star Trek: Lower Decks, The Boys Season 1 and 2 recap, Borat: American Lockdown (episode 1 only), Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, as well as documentaries Golden Era and the first episode of My Life as a Rolling Stone. And if that isn't enough, in our Look Back section, we touch on both Austin Powers sequels (The Spy Who Shagged Me and Goldmember), Last Action Hero, Supergirl and I.T. Enjoy!…

Yeah, BABY, YEAH! Do we make you horny? How about randy? In fact, don't answer that. In this very shagadelic episode, we rewatch Mike Myers' Bond parody released in 1997 and directed by Jay Roach. After a middling cinema run, the film would become a home video sensation and would propel the character and franchise into box office gold(member), with two sequels over the subsequent five years. In this very groovy recap, we discuss the film's merit with particular focus on characters, style of humour, music and its effective parody of the Bond franchise. We also delve deep into where the film has aged with particular focus on moments that would likely be omitted in 2022. Because that IS our bag, baby. So, grab your Swedish-Made Penis Enlarger Pumps (with accompanying receipt), don your best frilly shirt and sit down with us to journey forward from 1969 into a classic '90s comedy. And, of course, enjoy!…

We begin by paying tribute to the film industry veterans who sadly passed away over the month such as the legendary James Caan (The Godfather, Misery, Elf), Tony Sirico (The Sopranos), the original James Bond composer Monty Norman as well as Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas). We then take time to review the most recent films released such as the Toy Story prequel Lightyear, Jurassic World: Dominion, Thor: Love and Thunder, Elvis and The Grey Man. We then also cover a large swathe of television shows across the different streaming networks such as The Boys (Season 3), Stranger Things 4, Better Call Saul (Season 6), For All Mankind (Season 3), Light and Magic, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Season 1) and the Orville (Season 1). If that isn't enough for you, we also delve briefly into some older films we caught over the month such as Angels and Demons (2009), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), The Matrix films, Top Gun (1986), Mortal Kombat (1995), Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997),The Rock (1996), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), Deep Blue Sea 2 (2018), Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020) and Last Night in Soho (2021). In this (now standard) epic podcast, the Kapeesh crew spare no expense and rewatch Spielberg's classic 1993 family horror/blockbuster Jurassic Park to give an in-depth analysis of this stellar movie. The film heralded major advancements in digital animation, special effects and audio design and would go onto become one of the most successful films of the 20th Century. In this cast, we delve deep into the characters, cinematography, John Williams' score and many more facets as well as where it has dated nearly thirty years later. We also delve into the efficient writing, cinematography, story telling as well as giving our opinions on the entire cast and special effects crew. For anyone remotely interested in this film, this podcast should provide some insight worthy of your attention. In this special episode, Gordon and his brother Andrew Webster tackle the second of the swashbuckling hero's outings in Steven Speilberg's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Released in 1984, the film sees Indy stranded in India where he offers to help desperate villagers find mystical stones and rescue their enslaved children from a Thuggae cult. Spielberg's film was released to mixed reviews at the time but collective opinion seems to have improved over the years. In this cast, we discuss in full spoilerific glory the plot details as well as our thoughts on Harrison Ford's portrayal of the film's hero, the rest of the supporting cast, John Williams' score, cinematography, set design and a whole lot more. Enjoy!…
In this special bonus episode of the Bond Daft project, the crew reconvene to hammer out where Bond's latest adventure fits into the previously ranked films (conducted before it was released). Better than Diamonds Are Forever? Octopussy? Skyfall? Well, give it a listen and find out!

We kickstart our new series of monthly film catchups on a poignant note as we discuss the passing of the late, great Ray Liotta who sadly left us at the age of 67. In our brief tribute we discuss his litany of fantastic performances from films throughout his career such as Copland, Identity, Hannibal and with particular focus on his gangster portrayals in The Many Saints of Newark and as Henry Hill in Scorsese's classic Goodfellas. We pivot to the main films released over the last month with discussions on Top Gun: Maverick, Morbius, The Northman, Ambulance, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Operation Mincemeat and we even find the time to discuss the recent early episodes of new Disney Plus show Obi-Wan Kenobi. The entertainment industry has developed and evolved over the last 100 years and each decade has brought sweeping cultural changes in social norms. So, it's only natural that many things age out of their time. With the Bond franchise spanning six decades, it was only inevitable there would be some moments which do not fit today's social standards. That said, the Bond character and the films have always been criticised for the outdated attitudes prevalent from the books and over the years there has been an attempt to change with the times. In this episode, the Bond Daft lads reconvene to discuss the most egregious moments where the franchise has not aged well and with that discuss such weighty subjects as inherent casual racism, inequality and blatent mysogyny over the entire saga of films. It's a fascinating topic and also gives us many moments to play everyone's favourite jingle. Enjoy!…
If you want to be taken seriously as a megalomaniacal super villain, you need the perfect lavish base to concoct your devious schemes. At least, that's what the Bond universe has taught us! Some prefer to go for the classic hidden volcano base or the underwater super tanker and there are others that prefer the logical option; the mobile armoured train or the invisible stealth ship. And don't forget to consider the space station! So many options. But there are costs to consider and expensive contractor work so consider that when you start planning the building of your solar-powered laser hidden within your own island (with its own deathmatch funhouse too). In this episode, we gather together to discuss our favourites over the course of the franchise and pay tribute to the fantastic set designs and locations used to house Bond's baddies. At least, three of us appeared - Fran was off monitoring the Danger Wheel levels. Enjoy!…
In James Bond's world, a villain needs to have a diabolical plan. These people want your vague 'world domination' whether by creating world wars, underwater civilisations or sometimes to control the planet's only source of gold. And don't forget the old classic 'create a master race in space and obliterate the rest of the planet'. In this nice brisk episode (for a change) the Bond Daft lads reconvene to discuss some of our favourites of the entire franchise as well as some of our least. Enjoy!…

One of the key components of the Bond franchise is the main adversary of the famous spy. One of the curious things about the Bond franchise is the consistency of strange and sinister henchman which have found employment for the main villains and the depths of their committal to their boss' plight. Our spy has faced deadly assassins of all shapes and sizes and each have their own quirk or weapon of choice such as shoes that can be thrown to decapitate enemies, lethal but surely uncomfortable metal teeth, explosive milk bottles or even the classic trusty switchblade. If there is one thing that we all know from the Bond franchise it's that 007 has a love for the women. And some have even loved him. Over a series spanning six decades there have been some fantastic female characters and over the years the very essence of the Bond Girl has expanded into the collective conscience. However, the legacy of the women of the franchise has split opinion with many detractors noting the occasionally shallow or archetypal portrayals mostly as a result of dated social politics. With that in mind, we reconvene for an epic podcast to discuss the most iconic ladies of the entire saga as well as the few that were given short shrift. Enjoy!…
What would a superspy be without his trusty contacts? Or even an old buddy to wind down with at the pub after a hard day of espionage and occasional murder? Well, over the entire 007 franchise we have been gifted some fantastic characters to mix with our loveable spy. In this episode we gather together to discuss some of our favourites over the whole series of films with a brief mention of our (one) least favourite. Oh, to narrow this down we split the males into this category and the female allies will be discussed in the Bond Girl podcast further down the road. Let's face it, calling this Bond Boys just doesn't quite work the same. Anyways, enjoy!…
The Bond franchise is littered with death-defying stuntwork with some of the most odacious scenes involving daring bungee jumps to skydiving tussles and cable-car scuffles. Listen in as the crew reconvene to discuss our favourites over the whole saga, pay tribute to the brave stunt men and women as well as give our opinions on our least favourite stunt/action scenes. Enjoy!…
The Bond franchise has made it an expectation that a superspy will need, at some point, to engage his enemies with his fists. Similar to that famous politician's speech, Bond will fight on beaches, landing grounds, fields, streets, hills, trains, elevators and even in space. For this episode we gather together to discuss our favourites of 007's scuffles as well as the few which didn't quite work as intended. Enjoy!…
Bond's favoured mode of transport is just as important to the franchise as his love of casinos, beautiful women and toppling all those evil dictators/regimes. Over the long spanning series of 24 films, we have been blessed with a fantastic array of stunning vehicles - and plentiful product placement - from the classic gadget-filled cars to over-the-top villain transports. Join us as we discuss our favourite Bond vehicles and vehicular action scenes as well as our (one) least favourite. Enjoy!…

"Now pay attention, 007." Over 24 films, James Bond has been assisted on his missions with a plethora of fantastic tech wizardry and unusual spy tools. The ever-exasperated Q has deemed it necessary to aid 007 with an exploding pen, an ejector seat (we're not joking), a jet pack and even a grown-worthy invisible car. In this episode the Bond Daft agents wade through over five decades of comically unconventional gadgets to reach our favourites with the goal to declare a winner and two runner's up. Enjoy!…
Whether risking potential HR enquiries with his flirtations with Moneypenny, or trying the patience of his boss and quartermaster, Bond's fellow MI6 colleagues have always been a favourite among fans. Over 24 films, the relationships and dynamics have also changed over the years reflecting many different eras. In this special Ranking episode, we take some time to focus on the MI6 personnel with a discussion on our favourite moments with our 00 agent interacting with Moneypenny, Q and his ever exasperated boss, M. Enjoy!…
Beginning with the famous Monty Norman music for Dr. No in 1962 and following with the iconic John Barry scores over the next six films, the James Bond franchise has been a haven for fantastic movie soundtracks. However, over a series spanning 24 films they were bound to have a few that don't resonate as well or have aged less gracefully. In this episode, we discuss our least favourites of the entire catalogue with the aim to collectively agree the weakest and two runner's up. Enjoy!…

In this episode, the Bond Daft lads reconvene to discuss their favourites with a view to collectively agreeing the best score and two runner's up. Easy mission, right? Enjoy!…
One of the most iconic elements of the Bond franchise is the theme song. From Shirley Bassey to Tom Jones to Tina Turner and Madonna (shudder), some great artists and songs have accompanied the series since 1963. Unfortunately, for any long-running franchise there were bound to be some that didn't quite hit the mark. In the fourth of our Ranking episodes the Bond Daft lads reconvene to collectively argue the toss over which of the Bond theme songs is our least favourite with two runner's up. As Sigmund Freud once said, analyse this! And of course, enjoy!…

One of the most iconic elements of the Bond franchise is the theme song. From Shirley Bassey to Tom Jones to Tina Turner and Madonna (shudder), some great artists and songs have accompanied the series since 1963. In the third of our Ranking episodes the Bond Daft lads reconvene to collectively argue the toss over which of the Bond theme songs is the best with two runner's up. Easy peasy, right? Additonally, as it was not entered into the category as a nominee, we can confirm that this category has unoffically been presented by the Monty Norman James Bond theme song (from Dr. No) as - let's face it - it would have won otherwise. Anyways, enjoy!…
However, over a franchise spanning 24 movies there were bound to be times where the series opening doesn't quite match the high points. And in this episode the Bond Daft lads return to discuss the weakest of the opening pre-credits sequences with the aim to collectively agree on a winner and two runner's up. Enjoy!…

The Bond Daft lads return to review the final released 007 film, Spectre (2015). Director Sam Mendes returned for Craig's latest outing in which Bond's old adversary Blofeld makes a return to the franchise in the guise of a typically sinister Christoph Waltz. This was a successful but critically mixed bag on release but how does it hold up now? Listen in for our thoughts on Waltz, Dave Bautista's henchman Mr Hinx, the film's epic opening scene, Sam Smith's theme song and so much more. We also pay tribute to the late Dame Diana Rigg as well as speculate on the rumours of the next Bond. Enjoy!…

Sir Sean Connery sadly passed away on 31/10/2020 and to many he was the first and quintessential James Bond actor. Growing up in working class Edinburgh he eventually found international fame as the super suauve British spy, 007. However, growing tired of the role he then left the franchise and embarked on an incredible eclectic career which saw him portray Russian Naval captains, Egyptians, a Spannish swordsman and an Irish Prohibition cop for which he eventually won an Academy Award. However, becoming disenfranchised with Hollywood, Connery announced his retirement in 2003 and lived peacefully in Nassau with his wife. On this episode the Bond Daft crew delve into our first experiences with Connery as Bond as well as some of our favourite roles since playing the secret agent and recounting the stories of his early days. We also discuss what made him so iconic in the industry as well as his charity work for Scottish Arts and Industry. Amongst the praise for his legacy we do acknowledge his controversial views regarding domestic violence and, although not discussed on the podcast in detail, we reiterate that we do not condone those views and it is unfortunately a stain on his film and cultural legacy. But as a film podcast we do focus primarily on the actor and his work so hopefully you can enjoy this podcast which celebrates the film career of, arguably, Scotland's biggest movie star.…

The Bond Daft lads gather for the penultimate film of the franchise (for the moment) and review the third of Daniel Craig's 007 outings, Skyfall (2012). Directed by Sam Mendes, this was a massive commercial and critical success which celebrated the series' 50 years history with a blend of homage to the past and darker modern stylings. In this episode, we delve into spoiler detail on Roger Deakins' cinematography, Barden's sinister villain Silva and spend considerable time on Scotland's best gamekeeper, Kincade. Welcome to Scotland! And, of course, enjoy!…
In this lockdown catch-up recorded back on 06/08/20, the Kapeesh crew reconvene to discuss their film and media consumption of the week. On this wonderfully varied episode, we discuss The News Room, Ghost of Tsushima (again), The Good Boys, The Last Picture Show, The Living Daylights (again), as well as give our thoughts on Fleming's Live and Let Die novel, a cinema revisit of Aliens, Avenger's: Infinity War (yes, again) and Pulp: A Story of Life, Death and Supermarkets. We also find the time to analyse another of Gordon's dreams. Enjoy!…
The Kapeesh Crew return for another catch-up session to discuss their recent lockdown viewings. On this show we cover a wide berth of content from Mad Men, Napoleon Dynamite, Reality TV, pop culture conventions, Thor: Ragnarok, Grand Isle and the roller-coaster career of Nic Cage. Additionally, we also find the time to discuss some lesser films such as Teen Wolf 2 and the Fanatic (oh dear). Enjoy!…

The Bond Daft lads return to watch Craig's second outing as the MI6 agent with a licence to kill, 2008's Quantum of Solace. Directed by Marc Forster and a victim of the writer's strike, this was a troubled production that was also buried due to the expectation set as the sequel to Casino Royale. In this film, Bond deals with shady organisations trying to monopolise the oil industry as well as seeking vengeance for the death of his beloved Vesper. Join us as we dissect the film in spoiler detail. Enjoy!…
