J1ST 113: Slavery and Human Trafficking

Just One Small Thing Podcast for Catholic Parents

In this episode of the Just One Small Thing Podcast we are exploring slavery and human trafficking and why treating a person as an object and denying the freedom to direct their own life is a sin against the dignity of that human person.

A few important points made in this episode:

• Slavery still exists in the world today. It is more often called human trafficking. Today millions of people are trafficked as domestic servants or sex slaves.

• What the Bible refers to as “slavery” is more like indentured servitude. It is not ideal, but a person was not “owned” and they only served for seven years before they were released.

• The sin that rests deep beneath the sin of slavery is the desire we all feel to be better/more powerful than others and use the weak to accomplish our own aims.

As with all of the Catholic Social Teaching topics, it is important that we know the truth, but that we show our children what is beautiful. Yes, slavery is bad and ugly, but that is only because freedom is so good! Teach your children what it means to be fully alive and free to choose God.
