In this episode of The Inclusive Dad podcast, host AAron speaks with Jeaneen Tang, a speech-language pathologist, advocate, and author of Play Dumb and Sabotage. They discuss Jeaneen’s journey in early intervention, navigating IEPs, and her personal experiences raising a child with disabilities. The conversation covers practical strategies for fostering language development, building inclusive communities, and empowering parents to support their children. Jeaneen emphasizes the importance of collaboration among parents, educators, and peers, and shares actionable tips to create opportunities for meaningful communication and growth. This insightful episode inspires inclusion and advocacy for all. Key Takeaways: Early Intervention Matters: Addressing developmental needs early is critical to achieving long-term success and progress. Inclusive Collaboration: Effective inclusion requires teamwork among parents, educators, and peers. Practical Communication Strategies: Techniques like "play dumb" and "sabotage" encourage children to develop language skills naturally. Navigating IEPs: Parents need to be informed advocates, leveraging support and understanding legal rights. Perspective Shift: Empathy grows by seeing the world through the eyes of individuals with disabilities. Jeaneen’s definition of inclusion: Inclusion is creating an environment that is accepting and encouraging to a person who might learn differently or might present differently. Jeaneen’s Bio: I'm not only a speech-language pathologist, but I'm also a mother of a special needs son. Che is 11 years old now. When he was just 13 months old, he had a tragic accident and fell from the bed, suffering a traumatic brain injury. A few days later in the hospital, he had a stroke. The doctors told us he may never walk or talk, but they were wrong. I believe my years of experience with working with children with special needs and early language development plays a huge role in the way Che has developed and continues to develop. Having worked in schools, preschools, and providing early intervention in homes, I've gotten to see how the way we interact with children shapes the way they develop. Although there are many children who truly need speech therapy services due to a disability, diagnosis, or impairment, I feel a good number of children who are identified as needing early intervention speech therapy could be prevented if we have more parent, caregiver, and educator training on strategies to present and practice language. In this episode of The Inclusive Dad Podcast , host AAron engages with Tonya Wollum, IEP coach and host of the Water Prairie Chronicles . Together, they discuss Tonya's personal experiences raising two college-aged children with disabilities, her evolving understanding of inclusion, and the challenges faced by families navigating educational systems. Tonya shares her journey as an advocate and offers practical advice for fostering inclusion in schools and communities. The conversation also touches on parenting dynamics, faith, and how disability perspectives have influenced their lives. This insightful dialogue highlights the importance of proactive collaboration to create truly inclusive environments. Key Takeaways: Inclusion Definition: Inclusion is ensuring everyone belongs and can fully participate, as Verna Myers said: "Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance." Parent Advocacy: Parents play a critical role in guiding schools by offering practical solutions and demonstrating inclusivity. Testing Challenges: Standardized assessments often fail to reflect the true capabilities of children with disabilities. Sibling Impact: Recognizing and supporting siblings is crucial when focusing on a child with disabilities. Faith and Disability: Disability experiences can challenge and enrich personal beliefs, fostering growth and understanding. Tonya’s definition of inclusion: To me, INCLUSION means belonging. I think it looks different for each individual, but the feeling of inclusion is when every person in a group can be themselves while also being comfortable with those who are around them. It's when the people near you both accept you and work with any unique needs you may have so you are an active participant in whatever the group is doing. I think Verna Myers said it best when she said, "Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance." Everyone should be asked to dance and have the confidence of being accepted while dancing in their own unique style! Tonya’s Bio: Tonya Wollum is an IEP Coach, podcast host, and disability advocate. She works one-on-one with parents to guide them to a peaceful partnership with their child's IEP team, and she provides virtual mentors for special needs parents through the interviews she presents as the host of the Water Prairie Chronicles podcast. Tonya knows firsthand how difficult it is to know how to support your special needs child, and she seeks to provide knowledge to parents and caregivers as well as to those who support a family living life with a disability. She's doing her part to help create a more inclusive world where we can celebrate what makes each person unique! In this episode of The Inclusive Dad Podcast , host AAron welcomes Robert Delena, author of Without Restraint , to discuss the profound parenting journey of raising his son, Ryan, who was labeled with behavioral challenges and pushed into the therapeutic system. Robert shares how skiing and outdoor adventures unlocked Ryan’s potential, reshaping their approach to inclusion. They explore navigating rigid educational systems, questioning medication, and discovering strength in unconventional passions. The conversation highlights resilience, parenting missteps, and celebrating differences, inspiring listeners to challenge societal norms and redefine success for their children. Key Takeaways: Find Their Passion: Discovering Ryan's love for skiing transformed his confidence and path to independence. Question Systems: Parents must advocate for their child by challenging schools and medical systems. Strength-Based Focus: Emphasizing strengths over weaknesses leads to growth and fulfillment. Inclusive Perspective: Inclusion means finding environments where children thrive, not forcing conformity. Resilience Matters: Parenting is about persistence, learning from mistakes, and adapting strategies. Robert’s definition of inclusion: Inclusion is the opposite of exclusion. For long periods of time people have been excluded based on how they looked or how they acted, for the wrong reasons. If I could do it over again, I would have tried harder to find things that were inclusive for him from the start and not worry so much about what I wanted. Robert’s Bio: As a child, my son Ryan had difficulty controlling his emotions and was placed in therapeutic schools that relied on detrimental methods of behavior modification such as physical restraint. Nothing helped from a team of doctors to heavy medication. Then in 2010, he was voluntarily committed to a mental hospital for further evaluation. My wife and I were counseled to place him in a group home. We refused. Two years earlier, after an impulsive decision to take Ryan skiing, I discovered a different child than the version experts were so sure about. By his second day of skiing, Ryan was executing advanced runs, and with each conquest in the winters that followed, I began to question the path laid for his son by the professionals paid to judge him. Later, I convinced my wife to fight the medical and educational complexes over Ryan’s care and school placement, and together we fostered the freedom Ryan needed to pursue his dream of becoming a professional ski mountaineer. Robert DeLena was raised in Revere, Massachusetts, and is a graduate of The Governor’s Academy, Trinity College, and Northeastern University School of Law. He lives in Sudbury, MA, with his wife, Mary Beth, and his daughter, Abigail. In 2023, Rob and his son Ryan published Without Restraint chronicling Ryan's journey through several therapeutic schools after a diagnosis of Pervasive Developmental Disorder, and how an impromptu ski day changed their lives. In this episode of The Inclusive Dad Podcast , host AAron welcomes Rob Baugh, creator of the Life Rewired podcast, to discuss inclusion, brain injuries, and personal growth. Rob shares his journey from surviving a traumatic brain injury (TBI) to building a platform that raises awareness for invisible disabilities. The conversation explores how empathy and dialogue foster inclusion, the challenges of navigating life with a TBI, and strategies for addressing accessibility gaps. Rob emphasizes the power of storytelling to combat stigma and inspire others. Together, they highlight the importance of education and understanding in creating a more inclusive world. Key Takeaways: Invisible Disabilities Matter: Rob stresses the need to recognize abilities beyond visible limitations and acknowledge invisible disabilities like TBIs. Empathy Fosters Inclusion: Open conversations and genuine interest in others' experiences build empathy and inclusivity. Challenges Persist: Accessibility remains inconsistent, even decades after ADA legislation, highlighting the need for continued advocacy. Education Empowers Change: Educating others on what not to say or do helps reduce stigma and fosters understanding. Storytelling Inspires Action: Sharing personal journeys through platforms like podcasts can profoundly impact individuals and communities. Rob’s definition of inclusion: Inclusion is acknowledging my abilities instead of defining me by my limitations. Also, seeing beyond the surface of the invisible nature of my injury and valuing me for who I am. Rob’s Bio: I am a native to southern Indiana at the age of 4 I began playing piano by ear. Music has always been my first love. Inspired by Buddy Valestro the cake boss. I began decorating cakes at master level as a side business with hopes of opening my own bakery one day. I had to give up my dream after my traumatic brain injury because of the stressful demand and detailed work of the job. I spent the first 3 years post injury trying to find purpose for my pain. I spend my free time hosting a podcast all about brain injuries, trying to spread awareness of what we call the invisible injury. My passion is pleasing people and finding ways to make others shine. I am a soon to be published author of my first book about my personal experience living with a brain injury and other traumas I have lived through. I have often been referred to as the office comedian and have been told I could do it as a profession. But I find Joy in just turning frowns into smiles. If I can make someone laugh and forget about their troubles it makes me feel like I have completed the purpose that God put me here for.
