Last week, I shared how I created a beautiful patina on copper for a custom door project. This week, I show you how I veneered the center panel of the door with copper and walnut.
I started by cutting the door’s center core from 12-ply plywood. This ensures stability and resistance to expansion, contraction, or warping, providing a solid surface for veneering.
Next, I resawed some veneers for the door’s face. I selected a board with beautiful grain patterns that complimented the copper. As I resawed it, I kept track of the pieces to ensure they matched up perfectly when veneered.
I used exterior-grade glue to adhere the veneers and a special contact adhesive for the copper; in the end, the door’s core was veneered and sanded, and the copper patina turned out beautifully.
