STORY 1: Community Center Under Ownership of Cherokee County Nonprofit
Cherokee County has transferred ownership of the Charlie Ferguson Community Center to the nonprofit managing its programs. The county's Board of Commissioners approved the transfer, which includes a reverter clause to return ownership if the center ceases operations or faces financial issues. Originally a volunteer fire station, the center was refurbished with grant funds to serve the community. The nonprofit was given a year to prepare for managing utilities and maintenance. The center, which opened in July 2023, includes a food pantry supported by SmileUp! Charitable Foundation.
STORY 2: Bond Set for Amazon Driver Accused of Fatal Hit and Run in Cherokee
Bond has been set at $75,000 for London Best, a 24-year-old Amazon driver accused of a hit-and-run that killed 79-year-old Sandra Fitts in Cherokee County. The incident occurred on Cumming Highway, and Best allegedly continued delivering packages afterward. He faces charges of first-degree vehicular homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death. A search of the Amazon van revealed narcotics, leading to additional charges for possession of marijuana, THC wax, and drug-related objects. Best remains in custody, and the crash is under investigation by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office Traffic Enforcement Unit.
STORY 3: Bizarre Coffee Raises over $4K for The Children’s Haven
Bizarre Coffee's Bizarre Bash and Dash event on Nov. 16 in downtown Canton raised over $4,000 for The Children's Haven. The day began with a 5K run, generating $3,057 for the nonprofit. Following the run, the Bizarre Bash featured over 30 vendors, a pasta eating contest, art projects, and a kids' area with activities like a bounce house and face painting. The pasta contest winner directed a $1,000 donation to The Children's Haven. The first 100 customers received a special tote bag with gifts to celebrate the shop's four-year anniversary.

STORY 4: State medical cannabis registry reaches 25,000
Georgia's medical cannabis program has reached a milestone with 25,000 patients enrolled in the registry, allowing the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission to open more dispensaries. Currently, 13 dispensaries are operated by six licensed production companies. The program, aimed at improving patient access, began in 2015 but only established a legal framework for obtaining cannabis oil in 2019. The number of dispensaries will increase with every 10,000-patient registry growth. Recent listening sessions across universities have contributed to the program's expansion by gathering valuable feedback from various stakeholders.
