Part 2 with Eric Smith.

Immigration is as old as the story of America. Who belongs and who can come is an ongoing debate. (While we must also acknowledge that this episode was recorded on the land of the Arapahoe, Cheyenne, and Ute tribes.)

Everyone knows the old saying that when you mix politics and religion, things get messy. But we also all know that more often than not, politics and religion have gotten mixed together, and that sometimes they are indistinguishable. Listen in on our conversation with guest speaker, Dr. Eric Smith, who talks with us about the Bible’s relationship to one debate that is as fierce today as it was 2000 or 3000 year ago: the debate over who should be allowed to be a part of a society. How can the Bible help us think through our own questions about the power of the state and our obligations to our neighbors? Listen in as we brew some relevant theology and dedicate time to helping us plumb the biblical tradition for ways to think about these contentious political—and religious—questions.

/// *Rev. Dr. Eric C. Smith is an assistant professor at the Iliff School of Theology, where he teaches New Testament and early Christianity. He is also Teaching Minister at First Plymouth Congregational Church in Englewood. He is the author of the three books, most recently Paul the Progressive? The Compassionate Christian’s Guide to Reclaiming the Apostle as an Ally, which is newly released from Chalice Press.
