Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 57 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Monday morning 03 June 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.
In Rugby: At the HSBC SVNS Madrid 7s overnight, the Fiji Men’s 7s team lost their semifinal 14-21 France and Argentina beat New Zealand by exactly the same score.
Fiji Men then beat the All Blacks 7s 10-14 for 3rd place bronze, so the Paris Olympics Men’s rugby 7s is gonna be close.
Team Fijiana 7s lost to Ireland 26-19 and lost again to USA 31-0 but they bounced back to trounce Great Britain 7-42 for 7th place.
Bad news for Samoa - out of the next HSBC 7s series after losing 19-40 to USA in their Challenger play-off.
Meanwhile Fijiana XV has qualified directly for the RWC2025 Women in England after beating Manusina 13-27 while Tonga 39-5 Papua New Guinea in the Oceania Women’s Championship in Brisbane yesterday.
In rugby league: Rank outsiders, the North Queensland Cowboys held their nerve to win their third straight game, pulling off an 18-16 upset win over the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium yesterday, despite missing Tom Dearden, Reuben Cotter, Jeremiah Nanai, Val Holmes, Reece Robson and Murray Taulagi all on ORIGIN duties.
The Roosters were also without five of their stars as well, including James Tedesco, who was rubbed out late after being called up to the NSW Blues.
In boxing: Deontay Wilder’s career is over after a stunning loss yesterday.
The “Bronze Bomber” was knocked out by Zhilei Zhang during their mega-fight in Saudi Arabia. It was Wilder’s fourth defeat from his last five fights and any hope of a climb back towards a title shot appears to be dead.
Zhang, who had a crazy 30kg weight advantage, ended the fight in the fifth round with a crushing right hand shot that dropped Wilder to the canvass.
Incredibly, Wilder was able to get back to his feet, but was struggling to stand on wobbly legs before the referee stopped the fight.
Meanwhile in UFC, Russian champ Islam Makhachev submitted US veteran, Dustin Poirier in the fifth round of UFC302 main event yesterday, extending his UFC winning streak to 14 fights, joining Anderson Silva and Kamaru Usman as the only fighters in UFC history to achieve that feat.
Speaking after the fight, Makhachev confirmed he wanted to shoot for double-champ status and fight in the UFC Welterweight division.
“It’s my dream. I want to fight for the second belt. When you defend your belt it’s not the same. I need a new one,” he said.
The American may as well retire now.
In Football: Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund, to win the UEFA Champions League in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium in London yesterday 2-0 with two second half goals, and now play Europa Cup winners, Atalanta in the European Super Cup final.
And in SportsBiz: The LA Clippers Head Coach, Ty Lue has just signed a five-year contract extension at US$14Million, according to multiple reports.
That puts Lue, 47, among the highest-earning coaches in the NBA, with Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr said to be making US$17.5M annually, the San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich close behind at US$16M.
And Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra comes in at US$15M per year and Detroit Pistons coach Monty Williams at US$14M like Lue.
And that’s a wrap!
