Beloved let’s continue gleaning through Jude verses 12-13: These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted; wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of complete darkness has been reserved forever. Verses 12 and 13 gives us a vivid description of the depravity of these apostate men and woman. Beloved it appears to me that false teachers unholy and impure as they were, then and are now, continued to have outward fellowship with the Church! This is strange: but their power and influence in that place had likely swallowed up, or set aside, the power and authority of the real ministers of Christ; this is a very common case when worldly, time-serving men get into the Church. Listen to me, when false teaching has been preaching and teaching lies for a long time, it is hard for people to hear the truth from a real man of God. Listen sinful people don’t naturally run toward what is holy and righteous. They prefer what makes them feel good. That is why beloved we need to hear the Word preached and explained by faithfully man of God. By the way, God did not call us to adjust the Bible to our lives, but the very opposite to adjust our lives to His Word.

Jude said these false pastors and teachers are like “hidden reefs” which cannot be seen but destroy great ships that collide with these unseen “reefs” and like “waterless clouds” they look good but are worthless. They are “swept along by winds (they go with the philosophy of the world) fruitless trees (good for nothing but to be burned)” and “twice dead” meaning that they were never really born again (John 3:3) but only born of a woman. This means if a person is born again, they will die only once but if a person is not born again, they will die twice; once physically and finally eternally (Rev 20:11-15). They have reservations for the eternal outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth that Jesus so often spoke about (Luke 13:28).

Listen beloved Jude uses all kind of images to describe these apostates.

Jude says they are like hidden reefsin other words, hidden theological rocks that lie underneath the surface undetected are of great danger and can sink a local church. Pastors of local churches must be aware of possible invasions of false doctrine in the church. Beloved hidden reefs (False teachers) come into the church “without fear.” They have no fear of retaliation theologically because Christians naively accept them into their midst. They participate in passionate circles without fear of being called on their false doctrine. No one dares to expose them. Paul said in 1Timothy 1:19

having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck…

Listen to brothers and sisters a good conscience serves as the controls that steers the believer through the rocks and reefs of sin and error. The false teachers ignored their consciences and the truth, and as a result, suffered the shipwreck of the Christian faith (the true
