Operation Fast and Furious was a covert program launched by the ATF in 2009 to track the flow of illegal firearms from U.S. gun dealers to Mexican drug cartels, with the aim of dismantling cartel operations. Agents allowed over 2,000 firearms to be sold to suspected cartel middlemen, hoping to trace them to high-level traffickers. However, the plan spiraled out of control as the ATF lost track of hundreds of guns, some of which were used in violent crimes, including the killing of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry. The scandal ignited a political firestorm, leading to congressional investigations and the resignation of key officials. To this day, many of the firearms remain unaccounted for, continuing to resurface at crime scenes in both the U.S. and Mexico, marking Operation Fast and Furious as a cautionary tale of law enforcement overreach and unintended consequences.
