"I felt the chill of the bathroom floor up through my body, and I stifled the sobs. My two kids were on the other side of the door, and I didn’t want them to hear me. As I sat on that cold floor, I realized something had to change. I could not do what I was doing any longer. I started dating my husband in 1999, and it was now 2015. In sixteen years of growing, loving, and living, I had become so intertwined that it was easy to lose my own person in that union.
Somewhere along the line, I stopped being La Toya, and I started becoming my husband’s wife. We had built a successful business and were leaders in the spiritual community. The community knew us as a collective entity. I still had tremendous love for my husband, but for many years I had been expecting and wanting something from him that he could not give."
