Season 5 Podcast 137, A New Voice of Freedom, Argument for the Existence of God, “Spiritual Things.”

Here is another conundrum: both science and religion are based on assumptions that cannot be logically proven—the existence or nonexistence of God. Or to put it another way intelligent design vs chance. Invisibility is not evidence of nonexistence. The wind is invisible. Thunder is invisible. Laws are invisible. The quantum world is invisible. Yet we feel their effects.

Reality depends upon the senses we use and trust. That is why we have eyes, ears, nose, mouth, fingers, mind, and heart; however, not all senses are mortal. We also have an immortal spirit. That is why God also gave us the Spirit of Christ and the Holy Ghost. We have the tools we need to perceive both the mortal world and the immortal world. Though we may assign it different names, all men know that knowledge does not come simply by logic. There are things that we know to be true that cannot be proven by math or science.

In science, for example, we have Kurt Gödel’s incompleteness theorem which states that “in any reasonable mathematical system there will always be true statements that cannot be proved.”

In religion we face the same paradox. We know that God exists, however, using only the scientific method, we cannot proved that he exists. It is an act of faith.

We may have inspiration, dreams, visions, revelations, analogies, miracles, creative powers, muses, wonders, marvels, sensations, feelings, and intuitions, etc. Truth is sometimes felt rather than known. Sometimes we have comprehension in which all things suddenly come together, greater than their parts.

In his brilliant book, Act of Creation, Arthur Koestler illustrates how new ideas come by looking at one thing and seeing another, by the use of analogy. Galileo used the analogy of a ship to convince the world to follow the Copernican heliocentric view of the solar system rather than the Ptolemaic geocentric view. Intellectual and spiritual growth is often indirect.

Considering the fact that the existence or nonexistence of God can be neither proven nor disproven and that science, which relies first upon inductive and only secondly on deductive reasoning, cannot be verified or falsified on basic claims of the origin of life, then it follows that a little more humility is required. The claims by such eminent professors as Mr. Hawking and Mr. Dawkins that God is not necessary or that God is merely a delusion are not only unverifiable, but they are also meaningless. Occam’s razor is on the side of Christianity because the doctrines of Christianity account for all reality, both temporal and spiritual, with the least assumptions.

The prophet Isaiah teaches us this principle:

“Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. 10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. (Isaiah 28:9 - 11)

One of the primary assumptions of law should be that there is no such thing as uncertainty in any law, even on the quantum level. That must be as absolute as the speed of light. Any perceived uncertainty is cause for further exploration. When paradox, or an apparent contradiction that is nevertheless true, arises, such as the uncertainty principle, physicists need to keep looking until they solve the mystery. The resolution of true paradox is a perfect springboard to new discoveries and new laws.
