“When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." - John 20:22-23
Sometimes we wish we could just leave it to God to do all the forgiving and non forgiving? We would have no responsibility. We would not have to deal with our pain and anger. We would not have to deal with our guilt and shame. We wouldn’t have to figure out how to bless those who curse us or what exactly loving our enemies looks like.
The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives enables our capacity to forgive. God leaves it entirely up to us how we use that capacity. How much of our anger do we want to carry? How long do we want sip from our cups of bitterness? When do we want to put these burdens down?
God has already forgiven us, all of us. God leaves it up to us to forgive ourselves and each other.
