A common dilemma that plagues many of us on our journey to getting good with money is this: we finally save up some money, feel our first sense of financial confidence, finally start to feel things clicking into place... and then suddenly feel immense guilt and ickiness when it comes to spending money on things, even if we've saved up for them! This feeling is complete and utter proof of how money is NOT rational. In a purely mathematical sense, having money saved up for something is endlessly easier than living in a state of financial chaos. AND YET, so many of us save up for something for the first time ever, and when the time comes to spend that money, OOP, we feel horrible. Not cool, brain, not cool. In this episode I unpack this dilemma and explore ways to move through it and come out the other side financially confident and empowered. Highlights: How our natural loss aversion comes into play The emotional tension between spending and saving Letting go of binary thinking in all areas of our finances Why a good relationship with money ALWAYS needs nuance Gradually desensitising yourself from the ickiness Ways to organise our money so we're just the right amount of connected, and disconnected, with our finances. Welcome back to This is the year...! This week we're exploring ways to make 2025 the year you SLAY your savings once and for all. Saving money is one of the most life changing skills you can learn – and yes, skill is the operative word here. We expect ourselves to know how to save automatically, but for most of us, it's just not that easy. The human brain isn't wired to delay gratification. We've evolved to use the resources we have to avoid losing them, and so saving money (resources) for an undefined reason, to use on an undefined date in the future, isn't something that comes naturally to us. Luckily, there are ways we can hack our brains to make saving fun and easy, and in this episode, I'm going to show you how. Highlights: Gamifying saving to make it more fun Using a bundle strategy like the $1000 Project Creating momentum to keep yourself saving Building saving into your budget Learning to live below your means naturally Values-based saving Embracing a base camps vs climbs mentality This miniseries was created in partnership with PocketSmith: the personal finance software for all walks of life. 1 Being a "pleasure to have in class" – good for your finances, or bad? The Comments Section with E & V 51:59
In this episode, we discuss our common personality trait of being a "pleasure to have in class" – that is, you were a pleasure to have in class as a child, and as an adult, you're hellbent on making a good impression, being polite, and rarely rocking the boat. But what happens when you DO need to rock the boat? And what happens when your inner pleasure to have in class collides with your inner raging feminist? We find out in this classically chaotic ep. Welcome back to The Broke Generation podcast! This week, we’re talking all about choosing your word for the year - a trend that’s been around for a while, but one I think is genuinely worth the hype. You know that TikTok sound, “In the clurb we all fam”? Well, let this be the clurb where we’re all about intentional living and smashing financial goals, one thoughtful decision at a time. Picking a word isn’t just a cute exercise; it’s a way to set the tone for your year, helping you navigate life and money with clarity and purpose. I’ll share why I love this practice, how to reflect on what you really want, and prompts to help you find your perfect word. Whether you’ve got one in mind or have no clue where to start, this episode will help you get there.
